WINNERS JUST A MIRAGE AT GLORIOUS GOODWOOD: With winners hard to come by, Daqman leads Pricewise 53-19 into the fourth day of Goodwood (Daqman +71, Pricewise -77 to single-unit stakes). Today’s headlines:

MIRAGE HAS MOORE OF A CHANCE

1.50 Goodwood (Glorious Stakes) It’s unusual for older horses (1-10) to win this and, at Newbury in the Spring, Second Step was six lengths off Crystal Ocean, whom Red Verdon has since run to a length and a half at levels.

Red Verdon was also second at Newmarket and Sandown; in fact, hasn’t won on turf since May of 2016.

Mirage Dancer has been favourite for each of his last three starts, all slow-run races, including when he won over the Goodwood CD, and the race may depend on jockeyship, in which case he has Ryan Moore of a chance!

ANOTHER GLORIOUS BUICK RIDE?

2.25 Goodwood Only one filly has won this Group-3 mile in the decade, and the Lowther winner Threading has been in and out this season, winning her trial back at York, then twice thumped by Alpha Centauri.

Regal Reality was a big price on his return and Ostilio’s Britannia was let down by the runner-up, Curiosity, yesterday. The fourth home has also been well beaten since.

Blinkers didn’t help 8.0 offer Glorious Journey at Ascot and they are left off now but, with William Buick in tremendous form from the front, he could outrun Threeandfourpence, who dropped out of the Pattern to win an ‘easy’ on the last day.

HE’S MASTER OF THE GOLDEN MILE

3.00 Goodwood (Golden Mile) Beaten a head in 2016 (when stall 1 beat 5), Master The World won it last year (when 3 beat 6).

This week 6 beat 7 in a big-field 7f handicap, and 4, 1, 2 followed home a winner with a wide berth in the biggest turn-out over a mile.

So the stats cement the chances of Escobar (stall 2) and Seniority (3), who both ran down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup. The snag is that three front-runners are drawn high, so there could be traffic jams.

Escobar won before and after Ascot but Seniority has had a break, the Hunt Cup possibly too soon after his back-to-back wins at Chelmsford, a double completed only a week earlier.

Repercussion, South Seas and Fire Brigade all seemingly need rain. Master The World (BETDAQ 13.5 taken) is again well positioned in a low stall. He and Seniority (5.3) will be hard to beat

GREY KING GEORGE VALUE AT 10.5

3.35 Goodwood (King George V Stakes) Winners of the last four renewals – Take Cover (twice), Muthmir and Battaash – line up against each other.

Goodwood should suit Battaash and he’s gone right away in the ratings from Kachy, who ran him so close at Haydock in the Spring.

Havana Grey was a long way behind Battaash in that Haydock race but was scintillating at the Curragh on the last day.

Aidan O’Brien showed in the July Cup with U S Navy Flag that sprinting is the one area where three-year-olds have to be respected this season.

Sioux Nation was fifth in that race but my alternative to the favourite (in case he fluffs the start again) must be Havana Grey at the BETDAQ offers, a huge 10.5.

MAKE MAWAANY YOUR GALWAY BET

6.50 Galway (Guinness Handicap) Willie Mullins has been in top gear in Ballybrit week, his one-two in the Galway Hurdle outrunning my 20-1 third, Leoncavallo, and he’s put a blanket four-strong team over this one.

The last time I had the winner was Tony Martin’s Golden Spear (2016), whom I had spotted in a Grade C hurdle. Mullins winner last year, Whiskey Sour, had just won his maiden hurdle, and his previous winner, Clondaw Warrior (2015), had been placed at both the Fairyhouse and Punchestown Festivals that year.

Mullins favourite today is Mares Hurdle third, Limini, second here on the opening day.

Let me remind you that this is a 1m 4f Flat race, and that four and five year olds are 9 out of 10 in the decade.

On a line through Sea The Lion, last year’s runner-up, Mawaany, has plenty in hand of Gustavus Vassa, who is rated a 7lb better horse than Limini. I took 10.0 on BETDAQ.
