BACK-TO-BACK DAQMAN NAPS UP: Daqman followed his Wednesday nap, Dolphin Village (WON 6-4), with a maximum-stakes banker on Profitable (WON 2-5) yesterday. That made his score 19 winning bankers out of 26.

EIGHT WINNING BETS IN ONE DAY: He had doubles and a treble with his nap and two others winners at 5-6 and 1-2, and landed a third victory at Sandown with Alex Vino (WON evens). He had a seventh success on the day with a lay on Kelpie Blitz (last of six), eight if you count his Alonsoa saver.

ASCOT STILL PLAYING ITS JACK: Champion Hurdler yet Goodwood and Doncaster Cup winner on the Flat. But we’re talking about the 1920s and Brown Jack, his name still intact on the Ascot card today, despite the age of sponsorship. Daqman has a strong fancy in the Ascot feature today.

FLINTSHIRE: YOU READ IT HERE FIRST

Daqman Tuesday: FABRE ‘FLINT’ CAN FIRE IF IT’S DRY
Racing Post today: FLINTSHIRE FANCY ON ASCOT GOING

Daqman is counting his ‘overs.’ My King George bet, Flintshire, ante-post at 15.0 offers to win 50 points on BETDAQ, is now as low as 8-1 in a place with bookmakers, who are generally 10-1 and 12-1. Flintshire, one of nine acceptors for tomorrow’s Ascot race, was down to 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning, but there are still some of those big offers that I pointed up in Tuesday’s column.

If you are a Mukhadram fan, you can get 19.0 on the Daq but 11-1 and 12-1 with the bookies, who are also 11-1 and 12-1 (14 in a place) Trading Leather, where BETDAQ layers offer 15.0, at the time of writing.

And, of course, whatever you fancy, the orange is punter friendly, totting up to 106% total percentage probability this morning. Compare that with the 114 and 119% Total SP returned on the race in the last two seasons.

JUST MAID FOR THE BROWN JACK STAKES

3.20 Ascot (Brown Jack Stakes): On the face of it, with three wins in eight years, three-year-olds are losing the battle with older horses in this. But, in fact, the Classic generation has had only four runners since 2005 and recorded 1141 returns.

Additionally, this is Mark Johnston’s time of the year: he’ll soon be filling his lungs with the Sussex air and his pockets with Goodwood plunder.

So the only three-year-old in the race, his Maid Of Rio, must be on the short-list. She’s landed four out of five, improved more than a stone inside a month and, related to jumps winners up to 3m 4f, has really excited with the way she can quicken at 1m 4f and, lately, stepped up to 14 furlongs.

Elidor was fourth in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot but the three immediately behind him had won only in class 3 and 4 (same level as Maid In Rio), yet he has to give her 23lb today.

Hassle, a Montjeu galloper, loved the wide open spaces of today’s track last time but the runner-up, Alcaeus, also a winner in those grades, albeit a Sir Mark Prescott improver, was the ‘moral’, giving weight to Hassle.

Mark Johnston’s other runner, Sir Frank Morgan, though another Montjeu, seemed to improve for fast ground at Catterick on the last day and, as always, if a trainer has two runners, you have to do at least a saver on the second string.

3.55 Ascot (Valiant Stakes): Three-year-olds 7, four-year-olds 3. That’s the score in the decade as – to be expected – the second-season animals take control. As if to rub it in, punters on the last four favourites backed four losers, three of them older horses.

But, in fact, there’s been only one winning outright ‘jolly’ in eight years, and taking around even money a filly is never good for my urticaria, though Euro Charline certainly looks the part.

Fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, she was less only a length off Rizeena in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Rizeena’s recent second to Integral in the Falmouth at Newmarket puts the form clear of Woodland Aria, and Kiyoshi was beaten in both those races, at Newmarket and Ascot.

But Woodland Aria, a daughter of Singspiel, may be better than the bare form. Singspiel’s best – Moon Ballad, Dar Re Mi and Eastern Anthem – didn’t win at Group 1 level until four or five years old.

John Gosden, who trained Dar Re Mi, has thoroughbred wealth in depth this year, and 5.6 Woodland Aria may be the value. I am expecting a change of tactics from William Buick. Let’s see how they run.

4.30 Ascot Charles Camoin won over today’s course, today’s trip and today’s ground last time, but the time was slow and he beat only class-4 winners (including Double Discount)

Mark Johnston goes for a hat-trick, with his record in the race since 2004 an impressive 1122211. But what to make of his top weight, Salutation?

Salutation was behind Charles Camoin in two races at Epsom in the Spring, unfancied at 20-1 both times, so might be forgiven; yet he was unfancied again, at 25-1, when runner-up in the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot.

What will he do when he’s fancied, you ask; win by a street? Well, he’s certainly likely to go haring off in front, dropped back in trip, but has to last out giving lumps of weight.

And he has plenty of company for the lead: Double Discount, Hit The Jackpot and Zain Eagle are all front or van runners.

It’s a tough one to call, but I think we might see the best of Elhaame, dropped back to his winning trip for the first time since last August, after four consecutive tries at 1m 4f. Danger: Salutation.

4.50 Thirsk With Verus Delicia now having to lug 10st or so and Burren View Lady a Wolver-only winner, the way is clear, and the ground is right, for Charlemagne Diva to land a fourth Thirsk success, off a lower mark than when she won this race a year ago and with the tongue-tie back on: 7.6 on BETDAQ is far too big.

7.30 York Two more Singspiel fillies, Regal Hawk and Wall of Sound are both on the upgrade, with Wall Of Sound (surely she has no connection with the Spector!) good enough to run up to an Oaks second when the going is firm.

Regal Hawk could step up on her seasonal debut behind Regardez but, despite the stable optimism in the Racing Post this morning, she has drifted like a lonely dog on a raft right over my betting weir at 16.5.

Tasaday’s best form is all with cut in the ground and Saeed Bin Suroor’s success this summer is with handicappers and maidens. Wall of Sound was too big at 7.0 on BETDAQ this morning, with the Regardez form suspect, and Tasaday a lay unless it rains.

8.10 Newmarket What happens to Connecticut today will decide whether he’s a Cambridgeshire horse or whether he can hack it in the Pattern.

One-time Ascot Derby possible (King Edward V11 Stakes), things have yet to work out that good, but he could now take in the Great Voltigeur at York towards the end of August.
