17.0 KINROSS GUINEAS ANTE-POST

Last year was last year, this year is this. That’s the old adage about three-year-olds who did well as juveniles.

Despite the Frankels and Gleneagles who put two seasons together, the previous year’s precocious stars must be suspect until we’ve seen them race.

Can they develop further, or even stay at the same level, over the winter after a strenuous two-year-old campaign? You may have to bet a short price in the Guineas to find out.

Orpen, One Cool Cat, St Nicholas Abbey and Air Force Blue – who had also won the National Stakes and Dewhurst – were all major Guineas flops. And that’s just from one yard!

That stable was Aidan O’Brien’s and he’s on a four-timer in the race this year with Arizona.

Godolphin has a very strong contingent of colts, with Earthlight and Victor Ludorum among them, but based in France

In assessing my Guineas field, I had to assume that travel restrictions may rule out the raiding parties from both France and Ireland, and a value choice over Pinatubo would have to be Kinross, who impressed me over the Newmarket course in the autumn.

I particularly liked the way that he galloped through the dip as if there was nothing there. It never broke his stride. The form is not the tops but it was franked and ties in with Palace Pier, another with big potential but whose first season was cut short by injury.

Corals and Ladbrokes both show 16-1 Kinross, 17.0 in BETDAQ Sportsbook this morning, and I placed 3.125 points to win 50 ante-post.

1️⃣ Kinross was a scintillating scorer at Newmarket from a winner next time with the third much further adrift than when filling the same place behind Palace Pier earlier.

By Kingman, who was a brilliant miler, and got the 2019 Classic winner Persian King. His dam’s line is an influence for soft ground.

2️⃣ Pinatubo A fabulous two-year-old career, winning the National Stakes and the Dewhurst among six wins in a row. Dawn Approach ran six times, Frankel only four.

Will be a short price and may not have to face a European assault on his unbeaten record.

3️⃣ Kameko Winner of the Futurity on the Newcastle Tapeta had Kinross six lengths behind but that one was involved in a barging match early and the form can be forgotten. Nevertheless Kameko must not be overlooked.

4️⃣ Threat Beaten only half a length by Earthlight in the Coventry, so the Hannon hope will tell us whether the French would have had any hope of beating the home team.

5️⃣ Palace Pier Had the Lagardere as his target when leg injury ruled him out for the rest of last season. Form not franked at any great level but could make the great leap forward in the hands of John Gosden.

ALSO RAN: Military March, Kenzai Warrior, Waldkonig.
