33 POINTS PROFIT WITH THREE WINNERS OUT OF FOUR: Daqman landed three winners from seven bets in four races on the opening day of the Flat at Doncaster yesterday, making 33.80 on the day.

5-1 HIT IN THE SEASON’S VERY FIRST RACE: His winners were Mick’s Yer Man (WON 5-1) in the opening race, the Brocklesby, plus Personal Touch (WON 4-1) and Model Pupil (saver, WON 5-6). His nap was beaten a neck at 5-1.

1.25 Southwell Even when Doncaster was on, Royal Skies was Mark Johnston’s only runner today, and a hat-trick bidder for the stable, in that both Friday starters won, one at Doncaster, one at Wolverhampton.

Royal Skies’ good form over a mile or so last season was a bonus for this staying type, which suggests that he has the mix of speed and stamina to do well as a three-year-old. Could be too classy for Lingfield winner Edwyn Ralph, and is likely to make all.

2.0 Southwell Petrol had to be dropped to class 7 to get off the mark at Wolverhampton but can anything in this beat even such a modest winner?

Honest Strike has a course-and-distance success to his name but that was in 2010 and, when he came to win his race over the same CD five weeks ago, he burst blood-vessels.

First-time visors today could help but that was the second time he’d bled, and he seems sure to struggle in a fight. Linroyale Boy has twice been placed at Southwell but has to give weight all round.

2.35 Southwell Heidi’s Delight and Red Shadow could make this a fast pace, which may stretch keen-goers, Code Six, Fairy Wing, Man Of My Word, Olynard and Thorpe Bay, so potentially presenting the race to Flow Chart and Upper Lambourn.

Flow Chart was less than a length in front of Olynard at the finish of a Wolverhampton handicap recently but was a slow starter that day and can confirm the placings.

Thorpe Bay, Flow Chart, Heidi’s Delight, Upper Lambourn and Man Of My Word are all Southwell CD winners, kingpin among them being Upper Lambourn with four wins on the course and figures of 12014 at this trip in this grade.

3.10 Southwell Class 3! This is royalty, compared with the rest of the card though, in fact, the only winners at this level are Docofthebay and Dubai Hills.

Five-times-course-winner Dubai Hills bounced back after an absence to win a class 4 here on the last day. But ‘bounce’ is the operative word, particularly with a 10lb ‘reward’ from the handicapper.

So many horses at this level fail to hold their form after such a return, and Dubai Hills hasn’t been able to put two good runs together for the last two years, since his Southwell sequence over 7f. Caldercruix is also a recent winner here.

I thought this might be a chance for Dr Red Eye who, back in October, was getting over 2lb from Dubai Hills; now the gap is 15lb. But 32.0 on BETDAQ this morning tempts only my pennies, not a serious bet.

The Lock Master is also massively better with Dubai Hills, though an 11lb turnaround may not be enough on their running here in a class 4.

Docofthebay hasn’t won over a mile since 2007 and Roninski is also a 7f animal, as far as we know from the ‘good book.’

That leaves me on the side of the improver, Frontier Fighter, who ‘could be anything’ after three wins since January, with David O’Meara booking Eddie Ahern, since Daniel Tudhope would have been riding Hit The Jackpot in the Lincoln.

3.45 Southwell Mataajir and Mucky Molly have won over CD in this grade, whereas Michael’s Nook couldn’t win a claimer here and San Jose City hasn’t scored since 2010.
‘Molly’ might get a lead – no other obvious frontrunner – with Sextons House likely to appreciate his return to 7f.

4.20 Southwell The bridesmaid (form-figures 2222) Bispham Green should at last get his head in front, plummeting in grade from class 2 and 3 handicaps.

4.50 Southwell Maggie Pink’s form after a win is 00 and you can back Con Ata Tu only on potential, first time blinkered, first time in a handicap.

So maybe old Southwell warrior McConnell can score his ninth win on the course, dropped 10lb since the end of January.
