SCAMPI CAN DISH UP STAMINA

⭕ 3.10 York (John Smiths Cup) Spirit Dancer is a standing dish here – we’ve seen him at the last four meetings – but he’s won only a small-field race in slow time since breaking his maiden nearly three years back.

He’s also drawn 21 and I can find only one other winner in the decade from such a wide berth (Farraaj), racing keenly and getting across early. Millebosc (20) is another who’s really done nothing much since breaking his maiden, though William Haggas runners on this track are always to be feared.

No more does Sonny Liston (started in rear, drifted right in the Royal Hunt Cup) sound like a candidate for the left-hand bends out of stall 16.

There’s no guarantee that Long Tradition can translate his AW success to grass and Sea The Casper also looks unlikely to make that switch under a penalty.

Andrew Balding has won this twice in the last four years and Scampi is the only one I can trust to negotiate a high draw. He’s won on the course over further and this is his stepping-stone to the Ebor.

I talked up Charlie Johnston for Knockbrex and Killybegs Warrior (WON 20-1) for a handicap on the July Course yesterday but picked the wrong one (Silly Daqman!) I need a pound on Balding’s Nobel (stall 3) to make sure that doesn’t happen again here.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 11 Nobel, 14.5 White Wolf, 15 Scampi

FACING THE TRUTH ABOUT TROY

⭕ 3.25 Newmarket (Superlative Stakes) Charlie Appleby’s 2021 winner of this, Native Trail, went on to win the Curragh National Stakes and then the Newmarket Dewhurst, before taking the Irish 2,000 Guineas last Spring.

Great Truth, a Dubawi out of an Australia mare, went clear at Leicester last month and looks capable of handling City of Troy, with Aidan O’Brien a Superlative winner only once in the decade.

City of Troy is brother to his London Gold Cup winner and King George V (Royal Ascot) third, Bertinelli.

WELCOME GUEST: BETDAQ 21.0

⭕ 4.00 Newmarket (Bunbury Cup) The Royal Hunt Cup has provided the winner of this £61k to the winner handicap four times in the last five years.

Awaal (3rd) and last year’s winner of this, Bless Him (5th), were third and fifth in the Royal Ascot race, both well drawn today in adjacent stalls on the high side, 16 and 17.

But has the trend turned? Stall 3 has won the last two Bunbury Cups and low stalls today are where you’ll find Spangled Mac (4), fourth in the Buckingham Palace Handicap, with Ropey Guest (gate 3 today) and Montassib (7) well behind from stalls on the wrong side.

Ropey Guest, a 21.0 BETDAQ offer today, was on the wrong side again when second in this Bunbury Cup last year, splitting well-drawn Bless Him and Montassib, the winner and third.

He deserves last-chance saloon, with Awaal (BETDAQ 6.5) best on the other side.

SHAQUILLE BUBBLE BUSTERS..

⭕ 4.35 Newmarket (July Cup) FORTUNE COOKIES: Kinross, Little Big Bear.

Despite his antics at the start, Shaquille won the Commonwealth Cup, and the horse he beat, Little Big Bear, has been doubtful for today, after a slight setback at home.

Kinross (found to have been only partly shod) also had problems before finishing seventh in the Jubilee behind Khaadem.

William Buick takes over the ride from Frankie Dettori, and the deeper the going the better, whereas rain may bog down Khaadem, Run To Freedom and Emaraaty Ana, and the setback to Little Big Bear is not encouraging.

LAYS LOGIC: Ages three and four have won nine out of 10, which brings in the progressive CD winner Azure Blue, so still a tough test for Shaquille, whose bubble may burst.

*Previews on three Newmarket races appeared in Wednesday’s column.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
