DERBY: June 7: LAMBOURN WON 13-2 (BETDAQ 12.0)
IT’S LAMB’S TO THE SLAUGHTER

GRAND NATIONAL: April 5: NICK ROCKETT WON 33-1
MULLINS FOR A NATIONAL 1-2-3

DAQMAN LEADS ALL THE WAY: Daqman landed a double of the two great English racing spectacles of Grand National and Derby when he named Lambourn at BETDAQ 12.0 to win yesterday’s Derby two months after he gave the 1-2-3 with a 33-1 winner in the Grand National. Lambourn led all the way.

TODAY’S NAP: GOLIATH (3.25 Longchamp) beat Arc winner Bluestocking in last year’s King George but only narrowly held Hamish in the autumn. Hamish runs at Goodwood today; sounds like a double! Here’s the pick of Goodwood.

THE REST NOWHERE AT EPSOM

EASY, EASY! Lambourn made virtually every yard of the running under Wayne Lordan to take the £909k Derby first prize unchallenged at Epsom yesterday.

It was a repeat one-two of the Chester Vase, with 50-1 shot Lazy Griff again in second for the Charlie Johnston stable.

None of the fancied horses in the betting were seen with a chance, Lambourn taking three-lengths out of the field three out to land Aidan O’Brien his 11th Epsom Derby.

After the well-backed winner, prices of the next seven home were 50-1, 28-1, 50-1, 12-1, 40-1, 50-1, 100-1. The favourite, Delacroix, was 9th.

MODERN UTOPIA LOVES MUD

⭕ 3.35 Goodwood Anna Swan ran in the Group-1 Fillies Mile behind Desert Flower but her high stall is a worry.

Anna Swan’s stablemate, the royal runner Purple Rainbow, was a tempting 9.4 on BETDAQ this morning.

The step up in trip is in her favour if she consents to be covered up and, on breeding, she should like the ground.

Well-bred Janey Mackers (stall 3) is highly regarded and still in the Irish Oaks but David Menuisier has made a sluggish start to the campaign.

Queen Of Thieves (out of the one stall) was down the field in two Oaks trials and seems to need further. Tattycoram made most in the Musidora but faded.

Another trial failure, Modern Utopia – 6th to Minnie Hauk in the Cheshire Oaks – loves a deep surface. She is by Sotsass, winner of an Arc in the mud. I took 6.9 on Betdaq Betting Exchange 6.2.

IS THERE A WILLIAMS PLOT?

⭕ 4.10 Goodwood Zinc White ran clean away with the Chester Plate (Cup consolation) two years ago on soft after a 561-day break. Can we expect something similar, after 678 days off?

Well, several Ian Williams horses have suddenly returned to form recently but it’s not that simple as he also saddles Sheradann as well. Both were around 12-1 this morning.

Your saver is Spirit Mixer, another who has won at Chester on the soft, was third in this race on good ground last year.

PALLADIUM’S ASCOT TRIAL

⭕ 4.45 Goodwood We used to say German Classic level equated to English handicaps. Then along came Danedream, followed by Torquator Tasso. Two Arc winners in 11 years.

And until the Irish proved it was an untapped winning formula, we didn’t much mix Flat with Jumps; nor in the good old bad old days chasing with hurdling!

Here at Goodwood today we have a horse with a mix of all those things. The news alone that Palladium had moved from Nicky Henderson to aim at the Hardwicke Stakes will have many a purist’s nose twitching.

We are talking last year’s German Derby winner, Palladium, reckoned worth €1.4m before winning only a piddling hurdle race at Huntingdon.

Palladium debuts for John and Thady Gosden, after missing the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham with a sore leg. He loves soft ground and was 5.9 on BETDAQ this morning.

Cheeky Nicky Henderson runs Galashiels, a Listed winner for Andre Fabre on very soft, Front-runner Bolster might do a Lambourn if this were 1m 2f but is untried at today’s 1m 4f.

That leaves Hamish, more than twice Palladium’s age but second in the Group-1 Coronation Cup and in a French Group 2 last season. First-time-out Spring form 111.
