Like fathers like sons. Chaldean, son of 2010 Dewhurst winner Frankel, won yesterdayâs 147-year-old Dewhurst renewal, trained by Andrew Balding, whose father, Ian, saddled Mill Reef to win the race in 1970 on the way to a famous Derby victory.
Yesterdayâs race was without the 2,000 Guineas favourite, Sakheer, and the big son of Kingman, Sir Michael Stouteâs Nostrum, carrying the first colours of Chaldeanâs owners, looked more like a colt for next year’s Derby, a one-paced third in the fast time.
Chaldean, on the other hand, moved to the front of the market when his imposing stature was seen in the paddock and to the front of the race fully six furlongs out under Frankie Dettori, enjoying his control of the Rowley mile track on a potential Guineas star of 2023.
It was another flying leap for Frankie and a leap up the ratings for Chaldean, whose time was good and who must now closely challenge Little Big Bear.
Silver Knott followed subsequent Guineas winner Coroebus in taking the Autumn Stakes, completing a quick double for Charlie Appleby after his Flying Honours strode away with the opening two-year-old Group-3, the Zetland. The coltsâ ratings are potentially revised to:
