WHY ALMANIA WILL BE IN THE MONEY

1.50 Goodwood Almania has closed steadily in the market all week, yet is 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning. Another under the careful guidance of Sir Michael Stoute, dropping back in trip after running well in quality races at Ascot.

He had Sinjaari and Fox Premier behind him in the King George V Handicap, after Sinjaari ran second in the London Gold Cup, with Forest of Dean (now 7lb better) in fourth.

It’s hardly credible that Walkinthesand has to give Almania more than a stone, having beaten only current winners of class 3 and 4, and now worse off with his runner-up on the last day, Korcho.

NO THREAT TO RICHMOND FAVOURITE

2.25 Goodwood (Richmond Stakes) Coventry third Guildsman failed to get a clear run in the July Stakes and now has to overcome a high draw, with the one stall allocated to Threat who was a neck in front of him at Royal Ascot.

I see no reason why Coventry fifth, Golden Horde, can get his revenge, and the form of the Windsor Castle fourth Symbolize has been let down this week by the runner-up, Platinum Star (well behind Pinatubo).

PREP FOR MILLION-DOLLAR MISSION

3.00 Goodwood (Gordon Stakes) In the last four years, this race has seen the emergence of Highland Reel, Ulysses, Crystal Ocean and Cross Counter, subsequent winners of King George, Eclipse, Melbourne Cup and Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. Not bad.

Only Constantinople, Jalmood and Spanish Mission have the rating (all on 110) to have any hope of following in their hoofprints.

Constantinople was beaten only a neck in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot, giving 11lb to the winner, South Pacific, who was then overfaced in the Goodwood Cup.

The third, Eminence, ran well enough, third again, at Goodwood yesterday, and a good performance earlier today by the fifth, Almania, would be a further boost.

Spanish Mission won over further at the July Meeting and connections have to decide between a million-dollar (1m 4f) race at Belmont and the St Leger. If testing for the Belmont bid, they will want to show some speed on today’s ideal track.

Jalmood was third in the Group-1 Grand Prix De Paris in July, and may need some cut in the ground.

HERMOSA TO SPOIL GOSDEN PARTY

3.35 Goodwood (Nassau Stakes) Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore have been head to head several times this week and Dettori has won a mile.

Can he raise the game of 108 rated Mehdaayih past the 116 of dual Guineas winner Hermosa? Hermosa is up in trip; Mehdaayih drops down from her Oaks seventh.

Channel has completed a hat-trick at this trip, culminating in the French Oaks, Prix de Diane. Is she good enough here. Are any of them good enough in a shocking year for three-year-olds to beat the year-older Stoute pair, Rawdaa and Sun Maiden.

Rawdaa was four lengths the better of the pair at York but is a bit of a bridesmaid and I can’t really bet that she will give 8lb to Hermosa and Mehdaayih, with Hermosa likely to bring John Gosden’s run to an end. I’ve opposed the favourites this week; now, when I give them my support, I can just see the pendulum swing back. It’s been that sort of Goodwood for me so far.

SHANNING CAN SHINE FOR MULLINS

4.55 Galway Hurdle Horses beyond the age of seven and below five rarely win this, and the normal thing is to come to the table with June-July form for a fast-run two-mile hurdle.

Within these parameters is a short list of Ejayteekay and Ming Dynasty (their Bellewstown form just about equalised here, and both now beat Pearl Of The West), Chosen Mate, Play The Game, Shanning, Stratum and Tudor City.

Sole Pretender is up 31lb as punishment for his treble at lesser tracks, while Riven Light, Sayo and Golden Spear need rain.

It all adds up to an 8.0 BETDAQ punt on Shanning, who returned to form at Killarney – absolutely cruised up – and has been backed all week for this. Willie Mullins has won two of the last three renewals.
