VOTE DAQMAN: As the UK goes to the polls DAQMAN makes the point that punters are going through the same mental processes as voters every day of the week.

RIPON NAP: On a horse off the course for 313 days.

SOFT AT HAYDOCK: DAQMAN likes a long term maiden with form figures of 22-232 to be battle-hardened enough to cope with the testing conditions.

A NATION GOES TO VOTE

A novelty perhaps for the once every four years voter but pretty much an everyday mental process for us punters.

Assessing the current climate, the form of the candidates, a twist of gut instinct and making a balanced judgement will be at the forefront of those voting today but are also essential processes for punters.

Nobody forces anyone to vote and nobody forces anyone to bet. Missing a loser is the same financially as backing a winner but mentally even more rewarding.

Looking at a race and finding no clear cut betting opportunity should be applauded. There’s always another race and the clued up punter relies on the over-riding skills of patience and discipline for longer term reward.

I often make the case for better quality races bringing better about quality betting opportunities. Whilst it’s a broad brush of a ‘rule’ there’s logic behind it. Better horses tend to run to form more often than not whilst horses at the lower end of the scale – the Monster Loony Party if you like – tend to be the unpredictable ‘characters’.

So there’s no harm to be had by putting a cross through a race – even if on the ballot paper you are positively encouraged to mark your cross.

ACTION STATIONS FOR KHARBETATION

3.30 Ripon There’s no doubt that Kharbetation has ability to burn but he hasn’t been seen for 313 days because of his problems with the stalls.

He’s so highly regarded by patient trainer David O’Meara that he’s entered in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot in two weeks’ time.

The test today is not whether he’s worth his place in that illustrious field but whether he’s been cured of his stalls aversion in time to show his true strengths.

It’s a factor built into the prices but with a level break the current 4.2 on BETDAQ could look hugely good value on a talented horse.

His only previous win came at nearby Thirsk when he beat the the 4/11 shot Ehtiraas by five lengths with 10 lengths back to the third. National Hunt winning distances in a one mile race !

There was give in the ground that day too so the forecast good to soft at Ripon should be a bonus.

4.10 Haydock There’s one time when I like long term maiden in a field of mainly once rans and that’s when the going turns up soft like it is today at Haydock.

The reason being the experience becomes a much bigger factor and I think the case will be proven today with Benjamin Thomas (form figures 22-232) in this seven furlong race. He is proven on the ground with two silver medals at Pontefract on good to soft and then soft ground and surely deserves to go one better after defeats by a head and short head twice.

Main danger Peach Melba has no experience on softer ground and may flounder against Benjamin Thomas who could be just a bit more battle-hardened in these conditions.

7.00 Sandown Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore combine here with the lightly raced Pivoine who is expected to be Royal Ascot bound with a good performance tonight. He is entered up for the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes.

He was beaten less than six lengths when 9th in a Newbury handicap last time out but is expected to be a different horse on tonight’s prevailing easier ground. The extra furlong will also help, he won his maiden over this trip at Kempton and the handicapper has done his bit by dropping him a pound since Newbury.
