DAQMAN WINS TWICE WITH INTERNATIONAL 1-2: Daqman yesterday opened his York account with a double whammy, laying the International favourite and backing the runaway winner

WON 3-1 ROARING LION (International to win 30)
WON (lay) POET’S WORD (2ND 8-5 in the same race)

YORK DAY 2: ANY ADVANCE ON 60 VALUE WINS: Pricewise ducked the International and had a winner elsewhere on the card, so that the scores are now 60-21 to Daqman (PLUS 87 to MINUS 86). They clash today in the 2.25, 3.00 and 3.35 at York. Headlines:

LAYERS HIDING FROM THE GODSEND

1.55 York (Lowther Stakes) John Gosden took the lion’s share at York yesterday to go further ahead of Aidan O’Brien in the English trainer’s table.

The Lowther Stakes (Group 2 for two-year-old fillies) is a race neither has ever won, though seem sure to have first and second favourite.

The grey Angel’s Hideaway (Gosden) beat previous easy winners at Ascot and, on what we know now, we can’t fault her for defeat by Pretty Pollyanna.

Fairyland (O’Brien) finished more than a length in front of both Angels’ Hideaway and Pretty Polyanna in the Albany at Royal Ascot.

But O’Brien’s first-day form at York was 03000 and his overall strike-rate in the last fortnight is 10% and, while Angel’s Hideaway – and two others in today’s field – has been winning recently, Fairyland has been absent since the Albany, and Gosden’s Dark Angel grey has clearly improved since for a stable in top gear: 3.1 on BETDAQ this morning.

SECRET SEEMS TO BE MIDDLE DRAW

2.25 York A two-year-olds’ test dominated by Haggas (3), Hannon (2) and Ryan (2) in the last seven seasons.

I worried yesterday that Hannon’s Watan was having only his second run (and he ‘got beat’). The difference here is that stablemate Masaru has been given time since his debut success at Windsor.

A couple behind him that day have won since but both were down the field in the same nursery here over the CD at York yesterday.

The first three in yesterdays’ race (drawn 8, 7, 10) came down the middle, where Hannon also saddles He’Zanarab (stall 9) today.

He won here at York with cut in the ground in July but the runner-up was also down the filed in that nursery yesterday.

Also having only his second run, drawn 10, is Secret Venture, another who’s been given plenty of time and yet another whose debut-win runner-up was down the field in yesterday’s nursery.

Concierge has beaten nothing well but has the widest draw, and all I’ve learned so far studying this is that yesterday’s nursery winner should be followed. Name? Ginger Nut. Trainer? R Hannon.

I’ll choose from the Group-1 entries: He’zanarab, Fanaar, Kodyanna, Masdaru and Secret Venture, and take a chance that Middle Park hope Secret Venture (17.0 on BETDAQ) is educated enough to answer this test. Fanaar (11.0) is blinkered for ‘go’ on William Haggas’s 58th birthday.

AFAAK MUST BE IN THE HUNT HERE

3.00 York A mile handicap usually won by extremes of the draw (stalls 1 to 4 five times in total; 13 to 18 four), the old Knavesmire story of who will hug the rail into the straight, who has the guts and stamina to take a wide berth and win.

Arcanada (in 17) won at this meeting last year and is 6lb lower than for his more recent AW exploits (three wins in a row). He’s another one blinkered for ‘go’ today by a stable with a current 25% strike rate.

Royal Hunt Cup runner-up, Afaak, is only a pound higher and had last year’s winner of this, Flaming Spear, behind along with Kynren.

Firmament was the winner in 2016 and is 11lb lower than when third last year (12lb better with the fourth horse, Baraweez).

Sharja Bridge is capable of carrying the big weight but I prefer the value in Arcanada (BETDAQ 19.5) and the big-field nous of Afaak (7.6).

ALL CLASS IN THE YORKSHIRE OAKS

3.35 York (Yorkshire Oaks) My Fortune Cookies ace, Roaring Lion, named by me after the Dante, has had Laurens and Sea of Class join him in the list, as they have developed.

They can’t both win today and in the conditions I have to favour Sea Of Class, officially rated 2lb higher, and sure to get the trip after winning the Curragh Oaks under hands and heels riding from the Epsom Oaks winner, Forever Together.

Laurens ‘could be anything’. Travels like a dream, and won the Chantilly Oaks, though that is a shorter race, and there was cut in the ground that day in France.

Coronet was second in this to Enable last year but that was on good to soft though she has stepped out of her great rival’s shadow to score at York over shorter on firmish ground at the Dante meeting.

Magic Wand will love today’s conditions, as her Ribblesdale follow up to Cheshire Oaks success revealed. Laurens, Coronet and Magic Wand are all on 113 rating.

Of the three, I would bet that Laurens will increase hers but without beating Sea Of Class (2.7 BETDAQ offers), for whom Epsom was just too early for a Class-ic Oaks.

‘SUN’ SET TO SHINE AT BETDAQ 5.7

4.15 York (Galtres Stakes) Nine times out of 10, three-year-olds win this and they have finally come good as a generation in the late summer.

If this is a battle between Lah Ti Dar and Sun Maiden, it’s a question of who’s right on the day and has her conditions.

Lah Ti Dar, who prefers cut in the ground, was sick before the Oaks and wasn’t right in time for the Ribblesdale, in which Sun Maiden was third to Magic Wand, then only fourth at Goodwood.

It transpired that Sun Maiden was in season that day and the Frankel filly could bounce back here. My man in the long grass reports that she worked better recently than Nassau third, Veracious.

Certainly around evens Lah Ti Dar in both orange and green seems wrong, with Sun Maiden 5.7 and 6.2, and it’s traditional that, when I land a double whammy, I go in again, back and lay.
