YOU WIN SOME, YOU LOSE SOME: Aidan O’Brien, on a high after his 1-2-3 in the Arc, misses out on two of his regular targets at the Breeders Cup. Daqman reports on the juvenile invitations, and also checks out the other man on a cracking seam of success this season, jockey Jim Crowley.

TOMORROW: Countdown to the weekend’s big Newmarket Cesarewitch meeting. There’ll be an ABC guide to the last major handicap later in the week.

O’BRIEN IS MISSING OUT ON A MILLION

breederscupThey win and they’re in! There are $28million up for grabs in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita racecourse on the eve of English bonfire night, and a sizeable chunk goes to the juveniles invited to the party.

The final home focus for two-year-olds is on the Fillies Mile (Newmarket, Friday), the Dewhurst (Newmarket, Saturday) and the Racing Post Trophy (Doncaster, October 22).

But European runners in the Breeders Cup Juveniles could make more in one race than most can hope for in their Classic season next year.

Churchill, Caravaggio and Brave Anna – all trained by Aidan O’Brien – are the two-year-olds with the mostest at home so far, but now the big purses open in America.

And there’s no O’Brien this time around. The trainers who have won the win-it-and-you’re-in-it races chosen for invitation are Ken Condon, Hugo Palmer, Criquette Head-Maarek, Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte and Charlie Appleby.

BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE TURF (Friday, Nov 4, Santa Anita, $1,000,000). Won by Aidan O’Brien with Wrote (2011), George Vancouver (2012) and Hit It A Bomb (2015), and by Charlie Appleby (Outstrip 2013) and John Gosden (Donativum 2008).

Invited this year: Landfall from Leopardstown (Sept 10), Best Of Days from the Royal Lodge at Newmarket (Sept 24), National Defense from the Lagardere at Chantilly (Oct 2)

BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES (Friday, Nov 4, Santa Anita, $1,000,000). Won by Chriselliam (Charles Hills, 2013).

Invited this year: Intricately from the Moyglare at The Curragh (Sept 11), Spain Burg from the Rockfel at Newmarket (Sept 23), Wuheida from the Marcel Boussac, Chantilly (Oct 2)

HOW CROWLEY RIDES THE HIGH PERCENTAGES

Crowley’s a cracker! The season’s rise and rise of jockey Jim is evident in his superb record for trainers who have booked him today, both this afternoon at Brighton and at the evening meeting at Kempton (total rides 9).

BRIGHTON: five booked including: Eve Johnson-Houghton (40%): Hedging (2.40). Tony Carroll (40%): Essaka (5.10).

KEMPTON: four mounts including: Saeed Bin Suroor (50%): Dubai Dunes (7.10). Paul Cole (35%): Upstaging (9.10). John Ryan (25%): Thecornishbarron (7.40).

Dubai Dunes looks a good thing after the form of her debut second when well backed was boosted by a follow-up success from the winner.

3.00 Catterick We can discount Sir Viktor, unless someone was telling porkies when the Stewards were informed that he doesn’t act on soft ground.

Take him out and the BETDAQ orange total offers are underround! Theoretically you can back all four remaining and make a small profit on the race.

Get involved with each of them at their best offers and the profit could be much bigger. That would be a tough test of your punting skills for not a great return but a good race to practise in.

For my first position, I’d try the 3.25 offers about Top Score. He could end up a hot favourite on the strength of his Listed second on the last day, well clear of stablemate, Best Solution, who was little more than a length off a Group-3 win at Newmarket afterwards.

3.50 Leicester Faithful Mount, Fabricate and Stars Over The Sea have all raced from the front before, and they could make this an arduous test on the soft ground.

Monotype, Classic Collection and Fabricate have not won at this level but they are also the least exposed.

Michael Bell (Fabricate) hasn’t had a winner in the last fortnight, and Classic Collection at 6.4 is almost twice the price of Monotype, so I’m going for another Saeed Bin Suroor success, with his current form: 114021220.

4.50 Leicester Another stable in form is Peter Chapple-Hyam’s: according to the Racing Post’s excellent Trainerspot, he is your top man right now, getting 100% out of his horses.

We can’t be sure that 100% of Hestina is enough to win this but Peter has booked Andea Atzeni and 10.0 is a fair chance in the orange.
