DAQMAN FINDS A NAP FOUR DAYS RUNNING: Pym’s victory yesterday means that Daqman has landed a supernap or bull’s-eye nap every day for four days with four winning best bets out of five:

WON 8-13 PYM (supernap Monday)
WON 4-9 ESPOIR D’ALLEN (supernap Sunday)
WON 6-4 HONEYSUCKLE (supernap Saturday)
WON 9-2 CRACKING FIND (Friday bull’s-eye nap to win 50)

JANUARY DEJA VU OF EARLIER BULL’S EYE: DEJA VU: Cracking Find (WON 5-2) was making it two from two Daqman naps given win-50 bull’s-eye status following Tedham (WON 4-1) on January 5.
DEJA VU: Daqman completed a similar quartet of naps that day when Tedham also made it four out of five best bets adding to three winning supernaps.

WON 5-4 LET RIP (supernap)
WON 8-13 APPLES JADE (supernap)
WON 10-11 REETH (supernap)
WON 4-1 TEDHAM (bull’s-eye nap to win 50)

PUTTING THEIR BIG FEET IN IT

Just putting my shoes on. Then I’ll take you for a walk tomorrow and Thursday through the Dublin Festival at the weekend, two days to rival Cheltenham or at least put you on the front foot for yet another Irish smash through the Cheltenham prizes.

ENGLISH RULE: All horses must be shod both front and back, for’ard and aft, fore and hind. To prevent slipping.
PROBLEM: Not many horses slip but quite a lot overreach and cut their front legs if they have to wear shoes at the back.
VERDICT: Is the real concern not for the horses but yet again for the impression given on TV? Horse slips: shock, horror, drama. Horse is cut: it happens and the cameras don’t dwell on it; don’t even know about it in most cases. Just waving not drowning. Trainer fined for waving his arms to help get his horse to start for a race.

ENGLISH RULE: Doesn’t look good, and it’s a bit old fashioned (like starting some races with a tape?). Must stamp this waving out!
PROBLEM: Many horses have to be encouraged to start, mainly by stalls handlers and, when push comes to shove, these guys are given hero status.
VERDICT: In bending over backwards to airbrush away any hard edges to the sport, racing authorities attract the very publicity they are trying to avoid.

LINGFIELD FROZEN OFF

Today’s National Hunt card at Lingfield has been frozen off. The clerk of the course George Hill tweeted: “Temperatures dropped to -6C overnight, currently -3C, max forecast is 4C with not sufficient time for the frost to get out of the ground before race time.”

As the cold snap bites tomorrow’s cards a Leicester and Plumpton will also need to pass precautionary morning checks.

NESTOR THE NAP

1.55 Newcastle Nestor Park ticks plenty of boxes for me at Newcastle – despite finishing last of seven last time out.

I think we can easily forgive his run in the Grade 1 Challow at Newbury where he simply was outclassed.

It’s much more realistic to judge him on his previous effort at Warwick where it was he that did the outclassing to run out an impressive five length winner on ground similar to today.

His trainer Ben Pauling is in great form with 5 winners from 21 runners over the past two weeks (a further 5 placed) and he’s been winning with horses at big prices too which is always a further positive sign.

He has to give weight away for his win, but so too does market rival Arthur Mac who won what looked a modest contest at Catterick last time out.

Sam’s Adventure ran well at Ayr last time out and looks by far the best of the rest.

3.35 Newcastle There’s very little to choose between the seven runners in this competitive handicap chase which includes three last time out winners.

The concern about two of those three would be trainer form. Both Mumgos Debut and Las Tunas hail from stables that, like the current weather, are not hot.

The exception being Rebecca Menzies (2 winners from last 11) who trains Rossmore’s Pride who bolted home by 15 lengths at Sedgefield last time out. He’s taken a hike in the weights but could easily still play a major role.

6.45 Wolverhampton Tommy Docc is undoubtedly back on a winning mark judged by his last three efforts and can reverse 1m 4f course form last month with Isle Of Avalon who beat him a short head. If anything, the longer trip should suit ‘Docc’ more.
