MIRANDA MAKES LONG WALK CASE

It’s easy to get carried away. Protektorat has been my Gold Cup horse ever since my relaunch of Fortune Cookies.

And I gave those who think he was lucky not to meet a A Plus Tard at his best a bit of deep research yesterday to show that that’s the way it goes with many Gold Cup winners.

But those who are knocking the Morgiana Hurdle may be right in that State Man really had little more than a Closutton home-gallop, with the Willie Mullins stable filling first, second and third, a highly predictable order-in.

I need to see State Man win again before he is considered for the Cookies list because, if he did, he would become automatic choice for the Champion Hurdle.

He deserves to run in it, but I can’t make him my selection at this stage.

I shall include Miranda in the list, though she beat just two others yesterday. I’ve watched her develop and was impressed with the way the longer distance produced some really slick jumping from her.

It was a slow time but it was her first run over 3m and she had a strong target in Molly Ollys Wishes, who was a sure thing to get the trip. Miranda now heads for the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on December 20.

* Fortune Cookies update tomorrow.

7.2 SHOT TO SCORE FOR WALES

⭕ 12.55 Sedgefield Take a horse that’s different class running for a Welsh stable which is 25 points up to a level stake on the track.

Now add BETDAQ value (offers of 7.2) about him and, To Be Sure, you should get a decent run for your money.

To Be Sure has won hurdles two grades higher than this and is rated 110. He’s 3lb behind that mark over fences, unexposed from just three starts, and has been staying on as if today’s step up to a marathon 3m 3f will be relished.

Fiston Du Mou is raised 9lb for winning over the Sedgefield CD the last day, and his 11st 9lb will be a different ball game to the 10st 4lb he had that day, albeit he, too, is down in class.

Onestepatatime fell on his sole start since March and may need to recover his confidence, while Sir Apollo remains a maiden, placed just once in eight attempts, hurdles and fences.

THE DIVIL TAKE THE HINDMOST

⭕ 1.35 Southwell Of the trainers in form at the weekend, Harry Fry, Paul Nicholls, Gary Moore and Venetia Williams (two) all scored again yesterday.

And Nicholls can continue his run of 6-14 in three days with a winner at Southwell, where he has a 47% record.

Divilskin has already taken a Point over 3m and I can see him winning this bumper with ease on the way to hurdles and chases, for which his breeding suggests many potential openings, yet he was a tad better than 4-5 this morning on BETDAQ.

Spago has already run in a bumper but was trained that day last February by none other than Paul Nicholls, so trying to size up the preposition in the form book will not have been necessary.

Spago’s new stable, Fergal O’Brien’s, has given him a second wind op and added a tongue-tie.

A Westerner filly, Forever A Dove, has already finished second twice in bumpers here at Southwell and I hope her small stable does well with her.. But not today.

BLENKINSOP ON THE UPGRADE

⭕ 3.05 Southwell Fergal O’Brien also runs Sister Michael today, a maiden winner over the CD and clear of the remainder when second at Wetherby.

Likely to lead the field is the mare, Our Bill’s Aunt, who hasn’t moved much from her original rating, even with a win at Chepstow.

The same can be said of Supreme Yeats, who had to be dropped to a level below today’s to score over this CD but at least she was well supported to do so.

I’ll be happier with Blenkinsop, a steady improver, who looked worth following when he won at Ludlow at the beginning of the month.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
