JOHNSON UNBEATEN ON DOSTAL PHIL

⭕ 1.25 Newbury The J P McManus owned Dostal Phil has the distinction that he’s been ridden in all his races by a champion jockey.

He started his jumps-racing life winning a bumper at Deauville under Pierre-Charles Boudot; then had the first of five hurdle races with Barry Geraghty up, when moved to Philip Hobbs for the 2018-19 season.

But his two hurdles successes followed two changes: firstly, Richard Johnson as his new rider; secondly, the terrain of muck and mud at Exeter and Fontwell.

Very lightly raced for his age, and absent 312 days, but his form when fresh was 221 (after wind surgery) before pulling up the last day over a trip too far at Uttoxeter.

His age and the same weight as Dostal Phil make the six-year-old Funambule Sivola a formidable opponent as a recent CD winner on the soft at this level in an open handicap, now dropped back to novice company, after a few problems with his jumping.

At this time two years ago, Birchdale (also J P McManus owned) looked hot, after he’d won two hurdles over at least half a mile further, one of them a novice Grade 2 at Cheltenham.

But he failed four times after that, including third of four (at 32 lengths)and unseated (at long odds-on) in his two chases.

Harambe also has to bounce back from his 2019 Greatwood win over hurdles but this is fences, and Dostal Phil seems more suited to the bigger obstacles on breeding. BETDAQ 9.6.

SAM TO STAGE SHOCK WITH THEATRE

⭕ 3.05 Newbury The trainer on the up here is Alan King, who had three out of four last week and is hoping that a wind op will improve Heart of A Lion (2.30) but it’s a hard race to bet in..

King’s Midnight’s Gift in this mares’ handicap hurdle (3.05) has generally needed a better surface and is giving weight all round.

She and Panic Attack should be the improvers at age five. There is a 9lb difference between them; is it deserved?

In fact, Panic Attack slid from a 122 rating as a bumper winner to 113 over hurdles, despite winning at Uttoxeter.

Only then, and in mares-only company, did she score again; that was here at Newbury and it restored her to around her original level.

Back-to-back wins in the autumn of 2019 saw Midnight’s Gift start last year off 133. From such a level she has won only 1-9 but remains on 133.

The turnkey race was at Ludlow in December, which had Midnight’s Gift fourth, seven lengths off Miranda, with Miss Heritage runner-up.

Miss Heritage holds her position in the weights reassessments but, in three open handicaps surrounding the Miranda run, was beaten a total of 60 lengths.

Dame Du Soir has shown no improvement in 10 starts over the last two years. She was no match for Another Theatre at Southwell last month, with Maskada also well beaten.

I was left with the impression that hareing round those left-handers at Southwell was what gave front-runner Another Theatre a big advantage. Newbury is the right way round but it’s much tough.

The booking of Sam Twiston-Davies is a boost and, in fact, the handicapper has him a pound higher than Panic Attack.

Huge 20.0 offers on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE helps, and we should be able to cover the win with a bit on for a place, or a saver on Panic Attack at around 2.60. Midnight’s Gift drifted, too easy to back at 9.00.

ARCHIMEDES COULD TURN THE SCREW

⭕ 7.30 Southwell Archimedes has his 100th race today, 55 on AW of which 37 will have been at Southwell.

He’s showing 322 bridesmaid form figures right now but might have won here the last day but for being bumped when trying to make all.

His last success was all the way and the drop back to 5f (actually a few yards under) boosts his chance from the 3 stall.

Precious Plum is nearly a stone worse off with BETDAQ 7.0 offer Archimedes for the length between them here over this trip in march.

Brandy Station is 1-18 on AW, Arcavallo is 0-12 on AW, Dark Side Prince 0-4 here at Southwell and drawn 10.

Momentum Swing, who has had two lots of wind surgery, is first time in a handicap and Dylan’s Lad has started at 200-1 (twice) 150-1 and and 125-1 (twice).
