Champion’s League….
Champion’s League football preceded week eight of Primera Liga and all went well for the Spanish representatives. Real Madrid in particular will have enjoyed a break from their tense start to La Liga with an easy home victory over FC Copenhagen. FC Barcelona travelled to Glasgow to a team that some in the media are now calling ‘old rivals’ Celtic. The Scottish media were not so kind on Neymar da Silva Santos Junior the following day however it takes two to tango and Scott Brown’s sending off was certainly a game changer in a game that Celtic were coping quiet well. To this writer, who attended the match, a mention must go to the sixty odd thousand Celtic fans who rose to their feet to applause Andreas Iniesta as he was substituted near the end of the game, quiet a remarkable sporting moment to all who witnessed it. Atletico Madrid’s away win was yet another powerful show from a team with a serious chance of winning this year’s Champion’s League. Credit again must go to all at Atletico for their two goals to one away victory at FC Porto. This was even more remarkable as they were without in-form striker Diego Costa and losing one nil at Half-time. Diego Simeone had the balls to change his tactics completely at half-time, victory came and in turn showing what a remarkably disciplined and adaptable team Simeone has developed.

Leon King….
Europa league action was also on show and it is with one of La Liga’s representatives from there for which this week’s match preview begins. Real Betis secured a respectable one all draw away to crack Croatian outfit Rijeka. This week the Seville based club head to the Spanish capital of Madrid to face Joaquin Caparros’s Getafe. In line with most Spanish clubs, the majority of this Getafe squad are of Spanish nationality with just two players, an Algerian and a Venezuelan, employed. Getafe have had a decent start to the season at home winning two and drawing one however their away form has been abysmal with three losses and just the one victory. However it is their most recent game, that away victory to the impressive Espanyol, which show’s that Getafe are an improving team and now is the time to side with them for financial gain. This win away to Espanyol gave Getafe back to back wins, previous to this they lost (expectedly) away to Real Madrid which was preceded by another home victory. Taking out the Real Madrid defeat we could say it has been three wins on the spin. Unlike their Madrid rivals, Atletico and Real, there are no superstars in this team however right winger Pedro Leon, on loan from Real Madrid, is certainly a player to keep an eye on. A possible Real Madrid regular on his return their next season Leon is already a scorer of a spectacular goal against Malaga this season, he is starting to settle in nicely with his new team mates and Real Betis will need to wary of his threat from midfield.

Pepe and Jorgi….
Betis coach Pepe Mel has done a remarkable job since taking over in 2010.In his first season he won promotion for the Andalusians back into the primera liga followed by a solid twelfth place and last season up as high as seventh securing a place in the Europa league. This year Mel will have serious expectations of Europe again and it is games like these that he will need to win to achieve his seasonal target. Being a striker himself in his playing days (once winning the Pichichi) Mel has a preference for playing very attacking football both home and away. Whilst he does not have available the quality of player of the top teams his players try and execute this style to the best of their ability. Betis have not been as prolific at their home stadium this season but that may have something to do with the awful state of their own pitch. In similarity with their hosts Real Betis do not possess any particular super stars but Spaniard Jorge Molina, with three goals this season, is a wonderful talent and this could possibly be his last season at the Andalusian club.-One to watch.

Getafe for Europe….
As mentioned Betis are playing in this season’s Europa league and deservedly so. This has it’s positives but a little negative also as this fixture will be their seventh game in eighteen days and whilst squad rotation is in-play it is still tiring for a limited squad such as Real Betis. Host’s Getafe come into this game, full of confidence, on a good run and with a five, four, one style that will certainly frustrate Pep Mel’s side who after a hard season already would much rather face an offensive team similar to themselves. This will be a game of contrasting styles and expect the visitors to have a fair amount of possession however I feel Getafe can stifle the Betis attack and are capable enough to score against a team who are prone to leaving themselves open at the back. Maybe next season it will be Getafe in Europe….
