Who’d be a manager….
After a long and difficult road to Brazil 2014 England finally qualified for next year’s World Cup Finals. In most countries qualification would be a cause for celebration and praise for the squad but that is most countries! In England all the talk has centred on Roy Hodgson’s efforts at being a stand up comedian. The powerful media took the spotlight away from the manager and his squad’s efforts over the past two years and this is unfortunate. In these times no international team has a divine right to qualify for any tournament and Hodgson is beginning to realise that the only way to appease a nation is to succeed where many before him have failed, get an England team to win the world cup. To use a media savvy catchphrase ‘England Expects’!

Prawn Sandwich anyone….
Manchester United’s David Moyes is another manager in the news although he seems to be the butt of the jokes as opposed to telling them. The Scotsman would have known he had big shoes to fill but he has come under severe pressure so early into his reign. The current situation Moyes is in is not unlike that faced by his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson all those years ago but we all know how that turned out! In eight place after eight games Moye’s must be thinking of another joke from the past relating to one of their greatest players, Georgie Best’ “Oh where did it all go wrong?”

This Wednesday Moyes and his Manchester United team take a welcome break from trying to climb the premiership table but will face a tidy outfit in Real Sociedad. The ‘Theatre of Dreams” that is Old Trafford is the venue but this stadium does not hold an atmosphere seen at places like Celtic, Galatasary and Olympiakos so maybe Roy Keane’s old ‘Prawn Sandwich Brigade” analogy is not too far off the mark. This La Liga side will certainly hold no fears of playing in this famous stadium having already won away to Lyon (qualifier) and only conceded a cruel injury time winner away to Bayer Leverkusen in Group A..

SHOOT!….
In the summer just past many people with an uneducated view of Spain’s La Liga felt that the Spanish league would struggle (outside of Barca & Real Madrid) owing to the financial woes of most of their clubs and need to sell on their top players. As highlighted in this column a few weeks a ago La Liga teams may have sold aplenty but these same teams have any uncanny knack of developing average players into top players in a short space of time. Players of Spanish, Portuguese, French, South American and African origin make up the majority of these. Spanish midfielder Ruben Pardo and French born Antoine Griezmann are two examples in this La Real side. The experienced and talented Xavi Prieto alongside a name familiar to Arsenal fans, Carlos Vela also line up in a team that always create chances for themselves no matter who the opposition. Seven shots on target away to Leverkusen, five shots on target at home to Leverkusen and even five on target away to Barcelona in La Liga prove that Jagoba Arrasete’s men are not in the habit of “parking the bus”.

SuperVan to the rescue….
Oh the great Manchester United sit in eight place in the EPL after eight games although undefeated in Group A of the CL. A home victory to Bayer Leverkusen and a hard fought draw away to Shaktar have them in a nice position. A last gasp equaliser here last Saturday to Southampton was a major blow to their league title hopes although more worrying for United was that Southampton had more possession and more shots on target. Many United fans voiced their anger at Moyes for his substitutions being to defensive and trying to meekly see out a one nil victory. One of the key aspects of United’s lack of form is undoubtedly the absence of striker Robin Van Persie. The Dutch striker has missed four of their last six games however on his return against Sunderland they found winning ways again and he scored one in the Southampton game plus an international hat trick in between those games. A training session this week will in my view have Van Persie at 100% coming into the Sociedad game

Bravo….
Whilst I have highlighted Sociedad’s qualities and preference for attacking play above I do feel that they are meeting an improving Manchester United team. Man United, especially Van Persie, will benefit from Sociedad’s style and while the Spaniards will hold possession well and do pose a threat going forward, I do feel that over all they will lack in quality and will almost certainly be unable to keep a clean sheet. La Real will also struggle from dead ball situations and United’s over lapping wingers and their service to the flying Dutchman may be too much to handle for the visitors in what will be a very entertaining game. Last week Ireland keeper David Forde won the FIFA Man of the match award even though he conceded three goals in a three nil loss to Germany….It is very possible that Sociedad’s keeper, the aptly named, Bravo, will be in the mix for this games man of the match award….
