Sepp Retiring….
It was announced this week that the first goal line technology system is to be used in a high profile game in the UK for the first time. The community shield game at Wembley in August 2013 will see the introduction of this much discussed system apparently with a view to bringing it to the Premier league on a full time basis. In this writer’s opinion this new technology in the EPL will only dampen the entertainment value. No longer will Arsene Wenger have a basis to use his favourite line “I did not see the incident” and we are in danger of losing the services of the always influential “assistant referees” who stand next to the goal and.. well, just stand next to the goal. The fact that this technology is finally being allowed in to football signals the imminent retirement of the man who seemingly kept it out of the beautiful game for so long. Rumour has it that there is going to be a movie made about his life with the actors already in place. Robert de Niro and Al Pacino will star alongside Daniel Day Lewis who will play Blatter himself in the title role ‘The Godgrandfather”….

Burnt Fingers….
In this column last week I unfortunately tipped up a loser in La Liga and whilst all punters know this is part of the game I was absolutely gutted by how the result played out. I never dwell on loser for too long but when Malaga, a team who solely base their success on their strong defensive unit, played the first forty five minutes like my local pub team (sorry lads) it was a sharp reminder of how difficult this gambling game can be. Real Betis must be credited for flying out of the traps and scoring in the first minute and getting to the break at three nil making it game over, incredibly this was not a true reflection of the first half as an eight nil score line after forty five minutes would not have been unfair. This week Malaga host Copa del Rey finalists Atletico Madrid whilst Real Betis travel to high flying Real Sociedad which is the game where I am hoping to get back to winning ways on my Betdaq account!

Champion’s League spoils….
The beautiful city of San Sebastian will play host to a small band of Betis fans who will make the long journey to Basque country in what will be for these two clubs the opportunity to push on for a place in next season’s Europa League or even better snatch a place in the Champion’s League. The fact that Malaga are banned gives both of these clubs a great opportunity to compete with Valencia and grab that fourth Champion’s League spot which would be an incredible achievement for either of these clubs. This will be quiet an entertaining game with both sides insisting on playing attacking football. The consequences of this style has seen Real Sociedad’s ex Arsenal striker Carlos Vela bang in eleven goals & opposing number and Betis striker Ruben Castro with twelve goals.

Patience please….
Considering Real Sociedad lost six out of their opening ten fixtures their current Liga position points to an incredible mid season change of form and having been beaten only once in their last fifteen fixtures they are certainly the team in form in La Liga. That sole defeat came away to Real Madrid in a pulsating four goals to three cracker at the Bernabeau. Real Sociedad’s French coach Phillipe Montanier has done a magnificent job since he took the post in July 2011 and it was refreshing to see the powers to be at the Basque club stick with him when things were going badly in the early part of this season, a move many other clubs would do well to imitate.
Some top players have played for Sociedad in the past including John Aldridge, who was the club’s first non-Basque player and the incredible Xabi Alonso who has gone on to possibly become the best central midfielder in world football. While their does not seem to be anybody in the current squad that will ever reach those dizzy heights the club certainly has it’s talents. Club captain Xavi Prieto has the honour of scoring a hat-trick at against Real Madrid last January and as mentioned above Mexican Carlos Vela looks a natural finisher and is proving so with his season’s goal tally.

Real Betis…
Having blown away Malaga in their home stadium last weekend and their strong away record in La Liga then Betis will go to the Anoeta with great confidence.
I had highlighted last week the fact that Betis have a strong away record BUT not in recent games having their last four road trips. I also mentioned that they would struggle against the top four and I still believe this however with only one point separating these two sides and the morale boost gained in last week’s victory then their is every reason to see Real Betis put in a strong showing in San Sebastian. Ruben Castro is set to return to the starting line up which will be a huge asset to the team and though Betis coach Pep Mel knows he is coming to a very difficult arena he will be more confident with Castro back of getting at least a point. One Betis player who has really caught the eye in recent weeks is the on loan Arsenal forward Joel Campbell and this twenty year old is doing himself plenty of favours with his intelligent and vibrant performances.

Football!?!…..
Real Socidead did beat Barcelona here three weeks ago but were also held by Levante and Deportivo. If at the start of the season somebody had told me at the start of the season that these two teams would be playing for a possible Champion’s League spot in February I would have called the men in the white coats but typically…Football!?!
