HAYLEY TURNER: Looks forward to the Breeders’ Cup which begins at Keeneland on Friday and her thoughts heading into her final week as a jockey before retirement.

I think the most interest for everybody this week sits with the racing in the Breeders’ Cup in the US. I have picked a horse in each of these races who I feel are certainly in with a shot of winning;

Friday:
19.30 Airoforce
20.10 Liam’s Map
20.50 Harmonize
21.35 Got Lucky

Saturday:
16.05 Songbird
16.45 Undrafted
17.25 Fioretti
18.10 Legatissimo
18.50 Run Happy
19.30 Time Test
20.10 Brody’s Cause
8.50 Golden Horn
21.35 Gleneagles

bc300In the two big races, I have gone with Golden Horn and Gleneagles. I have tried to dismiss Golden Horn a few times this year, and at this stage I have learnt not to! He really is a very good horse, I have been trying to find a chink in his armour, but he really is just that good, so I have to go with him this weekend. I’m backing Gleneagles, because I would really like for him to win, as well as that it is coming in at quite a good price so I will go with a combination of my head and my heart on that one.

I like the ground and distance for Airoforce tonight, he didn’t get an easy run round his last time out, but still won easy enough so I really fancy him. I think something that is really important in these races is the draw, you don’t want to be drawn out too wide with that many runners so I wouldn’t take a short price on a wide runner. Time Test is another one I think the track will really suit, he is a very strong traveller and has a really strong turn of foot so being out there is right up his street.

I haven’t been involved in any great races over the course of the past week or so, but one that is of note would be my ride yesterday on Alfajer in Lingfield, she only got beaten by two and a quarter lengths in a listed race, and I had to hold her off because they went too slow, so I think she would win in that grade in the near future.

MY LAST WEEK

hayley225Looking forward to my last week of riding and Conor Dore is really trying to find me a winner so I can finish up on a high note. His best track is Southwell, which I’m from and I went to school there, so we would be quite close. It is really nice, they have organised a kind of farewell for me, so my Grandmother and my Mum and friends and family are all having a dinner there. One of the horse I think I can get the win on is Amenable on Tuesday, he really like the Southwell track, and has won there before over six and seven. Now that he is getting a bit older I think that a mile will really suit him, especially in Southwell.

I also have Orlando Rogue who ran really well in an apprentice race recently. He hasn’t ran at Southwell before but running at over 7 I am quite hopeful that he can put in a very good run providing he goes on that track, which can be a problem at Southwell.

Yul Finegold is the final horse, I didn’t get beaten by much on him when we last ran over a mile and a quarter the other day in Lingfield. He is stepping up to mark 3 in Southwell which is more up his street.

It will be an emotional end for me at Southwell, it is where I began my career and where it will also come to a close. In my first ride, my Mum and Dad came to support me in a 2 mile race, they waited for me at the winning post once the race took off, but I never actually came back! My horse actually broke its leg after the first mile, so it was a very traumatic beginning to my career, hopefully it will be a nicer end to my career.

My Mum will certainly be delighted that I am finishing up, because of all the calls she has received when I have fallen over my career, so it is a big relief to all.

I am having a party this Sunday to celebrate my retirement, which I am really looking forward to, it should be an excellent night. And of course my last ever race will be next weekend, so it will be an emotional week ahead for me but I am really looking forward to it.
