English 2000 Guineas runner up Kingman is being aimed at the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas taking place at the Curragh on Saturday 24th May, according to Lord Grimthorpe, Racing Manager to the owner Prince Khalid Abdulla. The John Gosden trained colt is likely to renew rivalry with Shifting Power trained by Richard Hannon who finished fourth in the Newmarket Classic and the Aidan O’Brien War Command.
TRAINER Dermot Weld has confirmed that Alkasser was “up for review” for a tilt at the Group One Classic following the colt’s impressive victory in the Listed Power EBF Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh last Monday. Speaking today Weld said that the Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned son of Shamardal may have his next race in the first Irish Classic of the season, “We will make a decision nearer the time but he has come out of Monday’s race in good shape,” commented the Curragh trainer. “Obviously we would be concerned about him getting a mile but he is an improving horse and has a big future ahead of him.”
Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien has also confirmed that War Command will be his big player in the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas. “War Command will definitely take his chance in the race and we will probably have one or two other runners,” he said.
O’Brien also indicated that Palace and Marvellous will be his runners in the Etihad Airways Irish 1000 Guineas on Ladies Day on Sunday 25th May where she is likely to face My Titania and Kiyoshi who both missed the Newmarket classic due to setbacks, while English 1000 Guineas runner up Lightning Thunder could also be in the line up.
Dermot Weld confirmed that Flying Jib is “almost certain” to take her place in the fillies classic. The filly, which carries the colours of Khalid Abdullah, put up a tremendous performance on her seasonal debut at the Curragh on Monday when swooping late to land the Group Three Canford Cliffs EBF Athasi Stakes. “She is an improving filly and I was very pleased with her performance on Monday,” remarked Weld today. “She is a good ground filly, has come out of the race in good shape and will come on a good deal again for the run.”
The Tattersalls Gold Cup on Sunday also promises to attract a star studded line up with entries including Magician, trainer Aidan O’Brien commented, “Magician has come out of his race (the Group Three High Chaparral EBF Mooresbridge Stakes) on Monday in good shape and is in a good place at the moment and his next objective will be the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup.” Other notable entries for the Group one contest are Trading Leather, Ambivalent, Mukhadram and the German trained Neatico.
Slade Power heads the entries in the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes on Saturday, while some of the top Arabian bred horses will compete in Sunday’s His Highness The President of the UAE Cup.
