PREVIEW
Liverpool have been busy in the summer transfer window and after narrowly missing out on Europe last season there is a real buzz around Anfield. Kenny Dalglish has added a number of British players to the squad, including Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing. There’ll be some concern that the Reds’ pre-season preparations have not gone fantastically well. A 3-0 defeat at Hull a few weeks ago was the pick of the below par performances.
The Reds start with Sunderland’s visit to Merseyside and the Black Cats managed to nick a point in the corresponding fixture last term. However, Sunderland have struggled at the ground in recent years and the 2-2 draw last September ended a run of four consecutive home victories for the Reds
Sunderland’s second half to last campaign was nothing short of disastrous as the side went on a terrible run of results after Christmas. Matters were not helped with the injury list that Bruce had to contend with that robbed him of nearly all of his attacking options. Being careful to avoid another collapse the manager has brought in nine new players, one of which is the exciting youngster Connor Wickham. The former Ipswich man was brought in for tidy sum and he’ll be itching to show he was worth every penny.
Liverpool have an excellent record against the Black Cats at home and I fancy them to kick off with a win. Punters can get around 1.56 for a home victory and that price is worth taking.
RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back Liverpool at around 1.56: 5 points
Thursday’s Return: -4
