Atletico Madrid meet Athletic Bilbao this evening for the first time since their emphatic Europa League triumph in Bucharest. The hosts opened up with a 1-1 draw at Levante and they showed their character when rallying from an early goal down to take a share of the spoils.
Los Colchoneros now have their first league game in front of their own fans where they excelled last season. They took an average of 1.89 points from their home league games in 2011/12 and will be looking to continue that form that helped them to a fifth place finish.
Atletico won the previous league meeting between the clubs thanks to their top scorer Radamel Falcao grabbing a second half brace. The Colombian striker has been in high demand over the summer and he’ll be keen to open his account this year after failing to score at Levante.
Bilbao have began well in Europe, but have so far been unable to match that form in La Liga. They were hammered 5-3 by Real Betis last weekend to underline the defensive issues at the club.
