PREVIEW
Both Reading and Arsenal have won only one of their last six games and, predictably, both Brian McDermott and Arsene Wenger have come under serious pressure. Reading are now bottom of the Premier League after Queens Park Rangers won on Saturday and have lost five in a row. Arsenal sit eighth but know a win tonight will put them into fifth place.
The Royals have never beaten the Gunners in ten previous meetings and last time they hosted tonight’s opponents they squandered a 4-0 lead in the League Cup and were beaten 7-5 after extra-time.
The newly promoted club have won only one of their last ten Premier League games at the Madejski Stadium while Arsenal have won none of their last six away games in any competition.
After an embarrassing loss to Bradford City in the League Cup, Wenger knows that the fans are growing restless and will have drilled into his players the need for a big performance. Reading are difficult to break down at home and only Manchester United and Tottenham have beaten them there this term but, having only kept one clean sheet all season, they are vulnerable at the back.
Add to that their lack of firepower and Arsenal really should have too much for them, even if this is not a vintage Gunners’ side.
