PREVIEW

It’s been a tough old summer for Arsenal fans with the constant speculation of both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri looking for a way out of the Emirates. There isn’t the usual optimism surrounding the start of the season and Arsene Wenger has a tough job on his hands if the club are to break a run of six years without silverware.

The Gunners start at St James’ Park and a win here would lift some of the apprehension around the club. Arsenal’s last visit to Tyneside arguably produced one of the games of the season as they blew a 4-0 half-time lead to leave with only a point. The Magpies were a real thorn in the Gunners’ side last term as they also came away from North London with all three points after an Andy Carroll winner.

Alan Pardew has also had to deal with his fair share of problems and in particular having to place Joey Barton on the transfer list. The manager has already lost Kevin Nolan to West Ham, who scored 12 times for the club last year.

With Fabregas and Nasri’s futures up in the air, Robin van Persie’s role at the club becomes ever more important. The Dutchman scored 18 last season and in every away league game in 2011. New signing Gervinho will join him up front and the Ivorian has impressed in preseason.

Arsenal had the best away record in the league last term and they also have a great record against the Magpies. I would advise backing an away win here at around 2.17 on the ‘Daq’.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
