PREVIEW
The last time these two sides met in 2006 there were a record-equaling number of yellow cards (12) and a record number of red cards (4) for a single World Cup match so this has the potential to be a very fiery encounter indeed.

Even more so when we consider that Netherlands have to win – and win well – to have any chance of making it out of Group B. Considering they were one of the favourites for the championship their campaign has been a disaster; a shock defeat against Denmark followed by a rather limp loss to the impressive Germans.

Despite an array of attacking talent and flair the Dutch have scored just a solitary goal this tournament. With reported tensions in the camp and the unwillingness of Bert van Marwijk to change his criticised tactics of a lone striker and two defensive midfielders, the Netherlands are surely homeward-bound.

Their Iberian rivals don’t look much stronger, certainly compared to the glorious ‘Golden Generation’ who should have won at least one major tournament in the last 20 years. After smashing in 59 goals and leading Real Madrid to the Spanish league title, Cristiano Ronaldo was many people’s tip for the Golden Boot. But although Portugal fired in three goals in their nervy 3-2 win over Denmark, Ronaldo has been woefully off target so far.

He might not be firing but even so Portugal boast an impressive head-to-head record  against the ’Oranje’, losing just once in ten encounters. They can further improve that record today and secure their place in the quarter-finals by seeing off the increasingly wayward Netherlands in a low-scoring contest.
