PREVIEW

Aston Villa have only won three of their past 24 matches in the Premier League but their confidence has been buoyed after they managed to knock out league champions Manchester City from the League Cup in mid-week. After a horrendous few months they must go into today’s tie against local rivals West Brom with real purpose.

The Baggies have been in good form this season, although their form has been at home and their away record is the 15th worst. However, they have kept six clean sheets in their past 10 Premier League matches and, against a side that has only averaged a goal a game, that defence may well keep out the Villa attack.

The home team have conceded nine goals already and West Brom’s range of attacking options – they have had eight different goalscorers of their eleven goals this season – may make the away side a difficult prospect.

Darren Bent has returned for Villa though, and his strike versus Southampton last weekend means he is now one short of netting his 150th career English league goal. Aside from last season, where defeat come in the midst of a dreadful run of form, Paul Lambert’s team have been solid against their city rivals at Villa Park. With them hinting at a sign of a return to form recently they can secure derby bragging rights.
