PREVIEW
When Juan Martin Del Potro captured his first Grand Slam title at the 2009 US Open the Argentine made a little bit of history. He became the first man to defeat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same Grand Slam tournament. In addition, although he won’t have realised it at the time, Del Potro remains the only player aside from Federer, Nadal and tonight’s opponent Novak Djokovic to have won a major since 2005.

A serious injury forced Del Potro out of the game for a long time but he has forced his way back to eighth in the world rankings with his booming groundstrokes and strong physicality capable of causing problems for any player. He was beaten by Federer in an epic Olympic semi-final but gained a measure of compensation when he saw off Djokovic to take the bronze medal.

Djokovic hasn’t been quite his imperious self this year after a 2011 that saw him capture three Grand Slams and the number one ranking. However, the Serb has been nothing short of sensational at Flushing Meadows so far – dropping not even a single set. It’s true the draw has been kind but an emphatic win over the useful Stanislas Wawrinka in the last round proved he’s on top form.

He leads the head-to-head against Del Potro 5-2 but has lost two of the last three matches, albeit he retired injured in one match. But, with the way he’s been playing so far looking ominous for his opponents, Djokovic can wrap this quarter-final up quickly.
