PREVIEW
It’s round two of the Open Sud of France today and the pick of the ties looks to be the all-French battle between Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils.
Gasquet is a former junior world number one but unfortunately, despite having abundant talent, has never made the breakthrough at the elite end of the game. He has been as high as seventh in the world and is still a top-ten player but such is the domination of the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and the returning Rafael Nadal, French dreams of a first Grand Slam since Yannick Noah in 1983 look set to go on.
Monfils was another really exciting French youngster a few years ago – also junior number one and winner of three junior Grand Slams in 2004 – and was another ranked as high as seven less than two years ago, but his form has deteriorated of late and he is now rated 108.
He made hard work of defeating Ruben Bemelmans in round one 7-5 6-4 and he looks to be up against it against Gasquet, who has lost just one match all season so far.
The older of the players by just a couple of months, Gasquet should make the gap between them in the rankings tell and 1.7 on BETDAQ is a very fair price for him to come out on top in the clash of the 26-year-olds.
