PREVIEW
Tonight’s clash between Championship side Nottingham Forest and Premier League team Wigan will be only the fifth time the clubs have ever met and the first time outside the league
Forest are so far unbeaten in those games, although three ended as draws. The Reds are trying to improve on an enviable League Cup record; they are the joint-third most successful club in the tournament’s history. They were back-to-back winners in 1978 and 1979, and again from 1989-1990. They were also runners-up in 1980 and 1992.
However, Forest have not beaten a top-flight club in the League Cup since 1993, when they defeated Manchester City in a fourth-round replay, but they do go into tonight’s match unbeaten in their last five games. They fought back to force a draw against Bolton on the weekend and Sean O’Driscoll’s men must be full of confidence on the back of that big result.
Wigan saw off Premier League new boys Southampton 2-0 at the weekend and Roberto Martinez’s side are now chasing a third successive away win in all competitions. They were beaten finalists in 2006 but have lost in the second round in five of the last seven seasons.
Layers have this priced up as a very close affair with Forest marginal favourites on BETDAQ. That is probably about right although, as a Premier League side, Wigan should perhaps be afforded a little more respect. However, on balance a draw looks the most likely option and at around 3.40 on BETDAQ it looks worth a play.
