For many football fans the season doesn’t get underway until the Champions League kicks off and it’s difficult to think of more of a glamour tie to kick off Group D than Real Madrid against Manchester City at the Bernabeu Stadium tonight.
Both teams are their domestic league’s champions and both have a reputation for splashing the cash in the pursuit of success.
Jose Mourinho is bidding to become the first man to win the Champions League with three different clubs, just a year after the Portuguese manager became the first coach to win English, Italian and Spanish league titles.
Roberto Mancini led the Citizens to their first league triumph since 1968 with a dramatic last-minute win against Queens Park Rangers last term but, like Madrid, they have looked wobbly this season. Their previously formidable defence has been particularly leaky.
Madrid have their own problems, having fallen eight points behind rivals Barcelona with just four games played in La Liga but they will defend a brilliant home record. Real have won their previous 34 opening home games in the Champions League and old European Cup, and 40 out of 42 overall.
However, they could be vulnerable tonight with Mancini desperate for his side to avoid the group stage elimination they suffered last year. City look huge on BETDAQ at around 6.4 with Madrid very short at around 1.6 but the best play could be backing Man City at +1 on the Asian handicap.
