PREVIEW

Leeds and Everton haven’t met since April 2004 and haven’t played each other in a cup competition since December 1991. They meet tonight in the third round of the Capital One Cup with an in-form Everton trying to avoid a surprise exit at the hands of Championship side Leeds.

The Whites may have won both of their previous League Cup ties with Everton but Leeds have only made it through to the fourth round of the League Cup once in the last 10 years – in 2008/09. Their manager, Neil Warnock, has seen his sides knocked out of the competition by Premier League teams on each of the last seven occasions they have been drawn against them.

The Toffees are playing their first away League Cup tie in five games but haven’t lost to a second tier club in the League Cup since a penalty shoot-out defeat in 2001. David Moyes’ men come into the tie on the back of an unusually impressive start to the season that sees Everton sit in third place in the Premier League.

Leeds have been very inconsistent this year but did beat Nottingham Forest on the weekend. However, they will have to step up markedly if they are to see off Everton and, with Moyes likely to view this tournament as a great chance to pick up his first piece of silverware with the club, they can do the business later.
