PREVIEW

Wayne Rooney is expected to return to the Manchester United starting XI for their trip to St James’ Park as the club look to bounce back from the humiliating 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Blackburn. Sir Alex Ferguson described the result as a ‘disaster’, but he would have felt a lot better after Man City crashed to a 1-0 loss at Sunderland on New Year’s Day.

United have suffered a number of injuries in recent weeks, but they have continued to get results when it has really mattered. That’s especially the case on the road and they have won four on the spin without conceding a goal. Revenge will be on the minds of the United players after a controversial penalty and some superb keeping saw the Magpies escape from Old Trafford with a point earlier in the campaign.

Alan Pardew’s side have slowly dropped down the table over the past few weeks after a blistering start to the season. The Magpies were well beaten by Liverpool before the weekend and that was Newcastle’s fourth defeat in six league contests.

United cannot afford to lose any ground to the league leaders after City comfortably beat Liverpool and Sir Alex will be going for the jugular after the disappointment of the last game. With Rooney returned to the side and their impressive away form to rely on, I would back the away win at around 1.73 on BETDAQ.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)

Back United at around 1.73: 5 points

Tuesday’s Return: +4.90
