Sunderland blew the chance to reach the magic 40-point mark when they went to fellow strugglers Aston Villa and were thumped 6-1 last week. And, after a dramatic weekend for the bottom sides, Sunderland know tonight’s clash with Stoke – also relegation-threatened – is a must win game.
Paulo Di Canio’s men have won two and lost two since the Italian took over and he was the first to apologise for the display against Villa. Bad as that was, Di Canio will be just as concerned that influential midfielder Stephane Sessegnon failed in his bid to get the red card he received at Villa Park rescinded.
Stoke were on a dreadful run before back-to-back wins over Queens Park Rangers and Norwich relieved some of the pressure on boss Tony Pulis. However, they have failed to find the net in four Premier League meetings at the Stadium of Light and have won just two away games all season.
In front of a lively Black Cats crowd, Sunderland can get the win that should assure Premier league survival.
