Remarkably, Brazil go into tonight’s friendly against Italy in Geneva ranked 18th in the FIFA world rankings with the likes of Switzerland, Greece and Ecuador all ranked higher. Now, we should perhaps take these rankings with a pinch of salt but it’s worth remembering Brazil haven’t been great in recent games.
As hosts for the 2014 World Cup they do not have to qualify and the lack of competitive action may help explain why they haven’t won any of their last three matches, losing the last two 2-1 to Argentina and England.
Even the return of World Cup-winning coach Luis Felipe Scolari hasn’t brought the transformation fans demand and it’s a bit of a surprise to see the Samba Boys as favourites at around 2.13 on BETDAQ, with the Italians, ranked fifth in the world, as big as 3.75.
Italy haven’t beaten Brazil in 30 years but, although they lost to France on their penultimate game, the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands last time out was good enough to suggest they can at least take get the same result later.
