There has been no recall for Shay Given or Stephen Ireland and most significantly record scorer Robbie Keane is sidelined.
Both teams have relatively new managers who are enjoying early honeymoon promise.
Serbia missed out on a World Cup spot but performed with credit in the qualifiers with wins against Wales, Macedonia and Japan together with creditable draws against Croatia and Russia.
Martin O’Neill’s tenure has started with a 3-0 win against Latvia and a 0-0 draw against Poland.
