GRADE 2 ACTION AT DOWN ROYAL: Two great days racing at Down Royal start this afternoon with the Grade 2 WKD Hurdle.

Down Royal are very much on centre stage this weekend but unfortunately the feature race today, the WKD Hurdle at 1.50pm, has only attracted four runners and looks very much at the mercy of the exciting Apple’s Jade.

The Gordon Elliott trained runner looks set to play a leading role at the top flight this jumps season having won three of her four races last season when trained by Willie Mullins. Her only defeat came in the Triumph Hurdle when second to Ivanovich Gorbatov but she finished the campaign with a superb victory in the Champion four year old Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival.

I’m saving the nap for another Elliott trained runner. Morgan in the concluding bumper at 4.05pm. He had plenty in hand when winning at Cork last month and should be able to mix it now in this tougher contest.

Dr Mikey has a double penalty after wins at Cork and Tipperary but should still make a bold show as he has had plenty in hand in those two wins.

Dundalk also race tonight and there’s been plenty of early support about for Blitz in the opener. A reproduction of her course and distance effort last time out should suffice in a weaker contest.

That of course leaves the international action on day one of the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Best of luck to the Irish raiders with Aidan O’Brien doubly represented in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at 9.25pm with Lancaster Bomber and Intelligence Cross.

In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at 10.50pm Aidan runs both Hydrangea and Roly Poly with Joseph bidding to become the youngest trainer ever to saddle a Breeders’ Cup winner with Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Intricately in the same race.

No bet for me on tonight’s card. The punting action is taking place at home!
