LISTED RACE AT GALWAY: SHAMROCK starts the week looking at the Listed race on tonight’s Galway card which features Almela who won by 19 lengths on debut over course and distance!!
No joy with the nap on Sunday at Dundalk – the race was won by a 50/1 shot who had beaten only two horses home in his previous two starts 🙁
A big week of Irish racing ahead climaxing with the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday at Leopardstown and the Irish St Leger at the Curragh on Sunday.
….. and don’t forget Laytown also race this week too on Thursday !!
Before then slightly more modest fair, although in fairness to Galway there is a good Listed race on their card tonight – the Ardilaun Hotel Oyster Stakes over 1m 4f at 6.35pm.
The race sees the reappearance of Almela who made a winning debut here over course and distance last month.
However, ‘winning debut’ doesn’t exactly do it justice. She stormed home by 19 lengths.
She went off a 1/3 favourite that day and may not have beaten much in behind (the runner-up Nicaragua has subsequently been beaten twice in two modest races) but it was hard not to be taken by Almela.
She faces a huge leap in class tonight but is up against largely exposed runners and there must be every chance that the Dermot Weld trained runner can progress to take this and remain unbeaten.
