SHAMROCK PREVIEWS THE CURRAGH: Three big races on the Curragh card this afternoon, including two Group 3 races.

I picked the wrong time to switch back to supporting Aidan O’Brien yesterday. After opposing him for much of the season – I thought the corner had been finally turned but his two runners in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket ran absolute shockers.

Bracelet finished 14th and stable companion, Tapestry, who was sent off the 4/1 favourite finished stone last of the 17 runners.

Back to the drawing board with O’Brien. I’m getting the horrible feeling I am going to get him wrong all season.

3:05 Power European Breeders Fund Tetrarch Stakes (Listed) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 12 runners)

It’s all very well taking on Aidan O’Brien runners but you simply can’t ignore them blindly. He has four runners here – and two of the first three in the betting. The BETDAQ market prefers Michaelmas as does Joseph O’Brien. The son of Elusive Quality tackles faster ground for the first time in his career and rounded off last season by finishing second in a Group 3. I prefer the chances of Alkasser. Dermot Weld’s runner showed absolutely nothing on debut but bolted home at Cork last month and with the benefit of a recent run is taken as a win and place proposition.

4:15 High Chaparral European Breeders Fund Mooresbridge Stakes (Group 3) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m 2f, 5 runners)

I’ve tried to find angles in to taking on the hot-pot Magician (O’Brien) but this looks one for Ballydoyle. He is 14lb clear of his nearest rival and the globe trotter should gain his first win since the Breeders’ Cup Turf here.

5:25 Canford Cliffs European Breeders Fund Athasi Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 7f, 10 runners)

Flying Jib improved with each start last season and finished off winning a Listed race over a mile here. The yard is in great form and Weld clearly thinks highly of this one who has an entry in the Coronation Stakes.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP (WIN AND PLACE): Alkasser (3.05 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Flying Jib (5.25 Curragh)
