WITH NO IRISH RACING ON MONDAY: SHAMROCK looks back at the three feature races on Sunday at Punchestown including the remarkable Hurricane Fly.

I was wrong with Hurricane Fly but sometimes you just don’t mind being wrong. It was very much only the ‘first set’ between the Fly and Jezki but Hurricane Fly won the Morgiana Hurdle in fine style beating the reigning Champion Hurdler by two and a quarter lengths.

Little King Robin had opened up a sizeable lead on the field but Jezki came with a double handful and when Hurricane Fly made a mess of the second last BETDAQ in running punters assumed only one result but not for the first time in his career Hurricane Fly hadn’t read the script.

Willie Mullins was understandably delighted after the race. He said: “When we took the rug off him in the parade ring many onlookers felt he was a bit heavy. But his homework suggested he was stronger than last year. Ruby was tactically very good. The onus was on the champion (Jezki) to deal with the pace, and it was easier for us to ride our race. It won’t be always that easy through the season. Tactically we had the advantage today.”

WATCH THE MORGIANA HURDLE

My day started badly when Alelchi Inois, my nap, was pulled up after a bad mistake in the Madigans Bars Craddockstown Novice Chase – the first Graded race on the card. The race went to Chancol who stayed on resolutely to beat long time leader Un Beau Rom.

On the tipping front by blushes were spared when, next best, Shanahan’s Turn won the Dobbins Outdoor Catering Florida Pearl Novice Chase at 11/4. The Henry de Bromhead trained six-year-old made it two from two over fences and stayed on strongly from the last to beat Indevan.
