SHAMROCK DOWN UNDER: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the Irish challenge in the Melbourne Cup run in the early hours of Tuesday morning. His nap yesterday Dushrembrandt was 2nd at 9/2.

A good run from the nap yesterday Dushrembrandt who finished second at 9/2 in the Cork Grand National. He stayed on to good effect but the winner Vics Canvas was simply too good.

No Irish racing on Monday so an opportune time to look at ‘the race that stops a nation’ – the Emirates Melbourne Cup which will be run at 4am on Tuesday morning. Either stay up late or set the alarm clock – whichever your body clock favours the most.

Irish hopes rest on the shoulders of Johnny Murtagh who bids to emulate Dermont Weld and win the great race. Weld became the first overseas trainer to win the Melbourne Cup 21 years ago with Vintage Crop and has also won the race with Media Puzzle.

Murtagh saddles two Mutual Regard and Royal Diamond.

Mutual Regards is the better fancied of the pair at around 12 on BETDAQ and Murtagh has booked top Aussie rider Damien Oliver for the ride.

Mutagh said: “The Irish have a good record in the race, so let’s hope it keeps going. I wanted to get middle draws and we got six and 12, so that was good. Mutual Regard has been in the better form this year – he’s the Ebor winner – but Royal Diamond has won an Irish Leger and has class on his side. He has done well since he has been down here.”

This is Mutual Regard’s first run since winning the Ebor at York and I think he has a solid win and place chance, even allowing for natural bias!
