ROSCOMMON ON MONDAY: SHAMROCK starts off the new week with a NAP on the evening card at Roscommon and also looks back on the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan on Sunday.

I got a fair run at decent odds with the NAP on Sunday Royal Diamond (2nd 7/1) but in the end he was no match for the Aidan O’Brien trained winner Leading Light in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan.

Leading Light, winner of last season’s Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster, was having his first race since finishing down the field in the Arc won by Treve and started to pounce on my front running nap with two furlongs to go and pulled three lengths clear at the line.

The winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said after the Group 3 contest: “You’d have to be very happy with him, you couldn’t be happier really. I was very happy with him at home, he’s a lot stronger and was doing all the right things. He had the penalty there for his first run and it was a proper run race.

“We haven’t seen the bottom of him yet, at the end of two miles at Ascot last year (Queen’s Vase) he didn’t seem to be stopping so we will look forward to that (Gold Cup) and he could run in the Saval Beg before that.”

There’s a mixed card at Roscommon tonight and my best bet runs in the fillies maiden at 6.55.

I’m really not sure I want to be backing Toe The Line at around 1.6 currently on BETDAQ. She is favourite more out of default as she looks no world beater. Whilst she finished third at Killarney last time over 1m 6f, she was beaten 19 lengths.

Obvious danger Go Gentle was also beaten a long way into second last time out behind the odds on Waaheb at Limerick

I’ll take a chance on a bigger priced runner to start the week. Well Hello benefitted from running tactics at Sligo last time out which nearly paid off with a shock 20/1 win. She was only beaten a neck and on similar ground tonight could cause a mini upset.

She is around 12 on BETDAQ at the time of writing so it’s a speculative punt to start the week.
