LEOPARDSTOWN IS ON: Champion Hurdle day or is it Willie Mullins / Ruby Walsh day with them having an odds-on favourite in first FOUR races ?

The good news, no great news, is that the meeting is on.

The course passed a morning inspection. It is soft to heavy, soft in places on the hurdles and bumper course and heavy on the chase course.

The Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh axis dominate the early part of the card including the big race the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at 1.55 where Hurricane Fly bids for a hat-trick in the race and is around 1.26 on BETDAQ to do so. There’s seldom a shock in this race and with Hurricane Fly arriving here in such good form and being in such a prominent position in the betting for the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, it’s hard to see him not collecting, particularly with a fitness question over closest rival Binocular who has been off the course for 320 days.

I think Urano is the nap on the card in the opener at 12.25. There’s a big field (22) but when you apply the filter of serious contenders we are looking at more like a four horse race.

Urano showed winning form in France and has finished second in both his starts over hurdles in Ireland. He was only just beaten by an odds on shot on debut and then was second over course and distance behind another odds-on shot Ned Buntine who looks well above average.

He is around 1.9 on BETDAQ at the time of writing, which makes him the BEST price of the Mullins favourites in the first four races !
