‘LIVELY’ NAP AT SOUTHWELL: Shamrock is after some spending money for the big meeting at Fairyhouse on Sunday with long and short shots at the afternoon English meetings.

Cheer up! It’s Fairyhouse on Sunday. Apart from the Hatton’s Grace, this is one of our big, big novice meetings, with the Royal Bond (hurdles) and the Drinmore (fences).

The Royal Bond has a fantastic record with among its winners Dunguib (Deloitte winner and Supreme Novices third), Champion Hurdler Hurricane Fly, Zaidpour, Muirhead, Iktitaf, Newmill, Hardy Eustace, Moscow Flyer.. fill their championship races in for yourself, as I take you right back to the almighty Istabraq (1996).

The Drinmore also reads like a who’s-who of Irish heroes, with Jessies Dream, Pandorama, Trafford Lad and Sky’s The Limit recently, and Dorans Pride and Alexander Banquet in the 1990s.

Will Steps To Freedom attempt a four-timer in the Royal Bond? Can First Lieutenant confirm his front rank among novice chasers in the Drinmore?

I’ll be looking more closely at Fairyhouse later in the week, meanwhile wishing I could find a few punts from the English racing to pay in advance for the super Sunday.

Don McCain looks all set for a double at Southwell, with Lively Baron (12.50) and Golden Call (1.20), Lively Baron being the one that’s backable.

Tony McCoy has been riding a lot for Jim Best lately, so it’s interesting to see him swerve the Best horse Beggars Opera and go for dual Flat winner Red Jade (1.55) first time over hurdles.

Tip of My Tongue (3.00) might make a handicapper for J P McManus and one of our Irish rivals in the bumper world, Alan Swinback, has A P up on The Ferick (3.30).

Cochabamba (2.50) would be my pick of the Irish-breds at Lingfield, as a CD winner who has run well in a Listed on the same course.

SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Lively Baron (12.50 Southwell)
NEXT BEST: The Ferick (3.30 Southwell)
EACH-WAY: Cochabamba (2.50 Lingfield), Tip Of My Tongue (3.00 Southwell)
