JUST ANOTHER MAGIC MONDAY: Shamrock had the perfect Monday with two bets and two winners at Limerick. His NAP The Four Elms won the opener at 9/4 and his NEXT BEST Summer Star won the finale at 2/1.

There’s no Irish racing now until Cork on Thursday and after yesterday’s results am tempted to put up the ‘Gone Fishing’ sign but my editor might not be quite so understanding.

The problem for most punters is also ironically the holy grail for the successful ones and that’s simply quantity of racing.

It’s more than ever and with racing increasingly global (Meydan, North America, Australia) the next race is usually no more than a couple of minutes away.

Imagine, just for moment, before the next at the Vaal, if there was only one race meeting a week in the world. That was at, say Dundalk, on a Friday night and there were only six races on the card. Do you think you would be a better or worse punter? I’d say I would probably be better. The races would be my complete focus for a week and you would know the form and every angle inside out.

We’re not obviously in that world – but because there’s a glut of racing we need to be equally as focussed and skilled at eliminating the races that don’t work for us. This varies punter to punter but the skillful ones are the ones that know their weaknesses and avoid races accordingly. It really is a case of missing a loser being better than backing a winner.

Today is hard. Irish-bred Bella Ophelia is the stand out in the 4.20 at Southwell. Chasing a course four-timer she still looks to be improving and this is one track where course specialists excel.
