It’s Red Mills Day at Gowran Park today where all the races will be a slog on the expected heavy ground.
2:15 Red Mills Chase (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 4 runners)
Willie Mullins won this last year with Champagne Fever but I’m in no rush to back his representative Ballycasey this year. He’s just lost his way a little and possibly confidence having been pulled up at Cheltenham and brought down in the Crabbie’s Grand National. He finished in mid-division in the Thyestes Chase here last time. On a more positive front, the return to a small field could get his interest rekindled but it’s likely the Grand National is his primary target again this season. Smashing looks the bet today. He is on for the hat-trick after a course and distance win in November was followed up with an easy win at Thurles (task made easier with the fall of Avant Tou). Morning Assembly is a huge danger if he can get anywhere near his best. He ran a cracker on reappearance at Fairyhouse.
3:25 Red Mills Trial Hurdle (Grade 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m, 5 runners)
Looks at the mercy of Sempre Medici who is comfortably clear on official ratings even allowing for a Grade 3 penalty for his win in a poorly contested Limestone Lad Hurdle at Naas last time out.
