IT’S THE FAMINE BEFORE THE GALWAY FEAST: A rare Sunday off for Irish racing today but with the week long Galway Festival starting on Monday – everyone needs to charge their batteries !

It was a great run from Trading Leather yesterday who was meeting his elders for the first time after winning the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby last time out.

Although a remote second to Novellist in the King George VI Stakes trainer Jim Bolger said: “That was very satisfactory. Everything went well – except for the last furlong!

“We probably could have done with a little more pace early on, but all in all we’re very happy. We’ll stick to the original plan, all being well – he’ll go to York for the Juddmonte International, then to Leopardstown [for the Irish Champion Stakes] and then back here for the Champion Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day.”

No Irish racing today but it’s the famine before the feast with GAlway starting on Monday.

I’ll be previewing each race at Galway this week.

Backing Dermot Weld blind is usually the answer !!

The master of Rosewell House has been the king of Ballybrit for many years and heads into this week looking to be crowned the Festival’s leading trainer for a remarkable 27th time.

Weld saddled a staggering 17 winners at the 2011 Galway Festival, bettering his previous best of 11 a year earlier.
