PUNCHESTOWN JOHN DURKAN MEMORIAL: A cracking race in prospect as last season’s dual Gold Cup winner Sizing John goes head to head with Djakadam who seeks a hat-trick in the race.

Some great racing in Ireland on Sunday with Un De Sceaux making his reappearance at Cork in the Hilly Way Chase and last season’s dual Gold Cup winner Sizing John starting his campaign off in the featured John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase at 2.05pm. The meeting got the thumbs up following a morning inspection.

Djakadam has won the last two runnings of the John Durkan Memorial and bids for a hat-trick. There is so very little to choose between these two – just a short head split them here in the Punchestown Gold Cup where Sizing John edged ahead close home.

Both are effective over the shorter trip and both perform well here at Punchestown. Both have winning form on testing ground but Sizing John is probably the better horse on quicker ground.

The market reflects the official ratings – Sizing John just ahead, a pound on ratings and trading at 2.34 on BETDAQ v 2.6 for Djakadam in what does look a match as next best Sub Lieutenant has something to find with both.

I narrowly favour Djakadam to win the opening battle between this pair, although he might not win the war. This seems to be ‘his’ race and Sizing John’s big race wins may come a little later on in the season.
