PUNCHESTOWN DAY TWO: SHAMROCK now looks at day two of Punchestown and pinpoints the best bets on BETDAQ.

No joy yesterday on what always looked a tough card for punters. I had high hopes for the 16/1 nap Cliff House as he was still in contention at the second last but weakened rapidly.

Hopefully better luck today, another seven races on the card and the going remains good to yielding.

3:40 Martinstown Opportunity Series Final Handicap Hurdle (95-123) (4yo+, 2m 4f, 28 runners)

25 runner handicap – a nice easy start to day two !!

I thought Landau was an interesting for trainer Gordon Elliott. He bolted home at short odds at Exeter last time out but his best form seems to come on a sound surface and the predicted rain at Punchestown this afternoon won’t help his cause. A better win and place option might be Eight Till Late who battled on well to win a decent race at Wexford last time out and seems versatile ground wise.

4:20 Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle (4yo+, 2m 4f, 14 runners)

Aklan represents Willie Mullins here but he has been soundly beaten in his last two starts. Henry de Bromhead has a strong hand with Identity Thief and Sadler’s Risk but it looks wide open with narrow preference for the Sandra Hughes trained Prince Of Scars who is still lightly raced and will find this considerably easier than the Grade 2 he faced last time out.

4:55 Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m, 11 runners)

The first Grade 1 race of the day and the remarkably consistent Shaneshill looks the best bet of the day. He was no match for stable companion Douvan when second in the Supreme at the Cheltenham Festival (was also second in the Champion Bumper the year before). Douvan again showed how good he is with a win here yesterday. Shaneshill won at Fairyhouse last time out and should prove hard to beat.

5:30 Bibby Financial Services Ireland Punchestown Gold Cup (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m 1f, 8 runners)

This looks a cracker on paper and settling on a bet is by no means easy. Willie Mullins has strong chances of winning it with his trio but he may be thwarted by the Gigginstown Stud pair Don Cossack (Gordon Elliott) and Road To Riches (Noel Meade). Preference is for Road To Riches who finished an excellent third to Coneygree in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He has to find two lengths on runner-up Djakadam but over this shorter trip might well be capable of that.

6:05 Attheraces.com Champion I.N.H. Flat Race (Grade 1) (4-7yo, Class 1, 2m, 13 runners)

This could be another for Noel Meade with the exciting prospect Disko who bolted home by 15 lengths here in February. Nina Carberry again rides and he is the pick in a race in which the three unbeaten runners could dominate.

6:40 Guinness Handicap Chase (Grade A) (5yo+, 2m 4f, 19 runners)

Toon River bolted home at Gowran Park last time out and has win and place prospects here.

7:15 Old House, Kill Flat Race (5-7yo, 2m 2f, 17 runners)

The David Pipe trained Champers On Ice exchanged hands for £205,000 having won a point to point at The Pigeons and is very much one to keep an eye on but it’s a no bet finale for me.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
3.40 Eight Till Late (WIN and PLACE)
4.20 Prince Of Scars
4.55 Shaneshill (NAP)
5.30 Road To Riches
6.05 Disko (NEXT BEST)
6.40 Toon River (WIN and PLACE)
7.15 NO BET
