THE BETDAQ PUNTER is back – and as usual looks back on his betting diary last week on BETDAQ.

Not the best of weeks for him for so many reasons – more losers than winners, a lack of Wi-Fi signal when frantically trying to lay off a bet, and then the weather ruining everything – never a dull moment in the life of a would be professional punter!

This week his attention turns to bets on football and racing.

Weather permitting – of course !!

Friday

With all the UK racing abandoned, Plan A went straight into the bin so I had to look for other sports to speculate on (I hate the word gamble, it has negative connotations), or even invest, as I prefer to call it. With so many websites offering opinions on just about every sport known to man (and a few others), I dipped my toe in the water of domestic football leagues outside of my comfort zone (which is basically the UK), and had a quick fire short priced treble on the French Ligue Two as they had the most matches to choose from Friday evening. Interestingly, the odds about the home teams were generally better than I expected so I covered all seven games in straight win singles for a bit of fun– thus giving me an excuse for spending my evening on the tablet once I got home from work. Winners at BETDAQ odds of 2.5 (Arles), 2.1 (Le Mans), 2.42 (Nimes), and 2.6 (Tours) saw a profit of 2.62 points to my small stakes but did make me think about something similar on Saturday though naturally, there are too many matches to take that risk on every single game!

Saturday

Once again the weather has pretty much killed the horse racing and although I have nothing against the all-weather racing, that certainly has its place, nothing appealed and much as I love a pint, there are other ways to risk my money thanks. With my English football bets placed bright and early in an attempt to get the best BETDAQ prices available, I had another little go at the old French soccer – only after yesterday, I upped my stakes a little. This time Ligue 1 seemed to offer better value (and I do not proclaim to know one team from another so it makes no difference to me who they are!), so once again home win singles were the order of the day, with six bets placed in total – so six points risked. Four winners out of six at BETDAQ odds of 2.2, 1.9, 1.7, and 1.72 did not make me rich, but a small profit of 1.52 points is always better than a loss in my book and this pattern will hopefully continue long term? Later in the evening I confess to having signed up to a Greyhound tipping service (don’t laugh), so I risked some (not all) of my earlier profits on Trap 5 in the 8.50 at BETDAQ odds of 3.6 (SP Evens) and Trap 6 in the 9.06, (BETDAQ odds 3.5, SP 5/4) both running at Crayford. Naturally they both lost but that is dog racing for you, though I have to say they were both well supported so have I found a back to lay system – only time will tell on that one? As for my English football bets – disastrous is a much used word but accurate in this case as Hull failed to finish off an otherwise winning treble by letting in an equaliser in the 79th minute despite dominating the game which only goes to show how fragile it can be in these games hence my reduced bet sizes of late!

Sunday

My quiet day when the family make me do other things around the house and keep me away from technology as best as they can. If I get up early enough I can finish my chores in time for the live football, and once again we had a super Sunday according to the TV adverts at least. As I am not a fan of any of the four teams involved there was no way I would be looking for winners (other than me of course!), so I backed both games on BETDAQ for both teams to score thanks to the attacking elements on the field in both matches, and at odds of 1.89 and 1.95 I didn’t exactly clear up, but I did have some fun watching the games and added a little to the BETDAQ bank as well.

Monday

As a Toffee I never back Everton nor bet against them so that was the evening football off the radar. Horse racing saw Wolverhampton survive the cold snap but they were the only ones and there wasn’t a lot worth risking my hard earned money on. Odds on is a game I sometimes play (and it’s easy to place the bets in advance during lunch break!), but there weren’t many of those either, so it wasn’t too risky or too rewarding. Two bets at 2.1 (OK, I bent the rules a bit) and 1.35 were all I had, but they both won though with my all-weather staking plan I won’t be going on holiday just yet.

Tuesday

A toilet break trawl of the internet told me that two horses were strongly fancied and likely to be backed on Tuesday so I got involved in both and hoped for the best. This time the plan was to get out at a shorter price if possible (back and lay), and I think I made the right decision? Woolfall Sovereign was freely available at 4.1 on BETDAQ early doors so I had a chunk of that as well as Presburg (priced on BETDAQ at odds of 3.7), and I laid them both back at around the 3.2 mark so profit made, but with one winning and one losing I am still not sure if I am better off or not?

Wednesday

Sorry but odds of 1.66 about an erratic Arsenal side did not appeal so no bets in the Premiership for me, a remark that also applied to Chelsea away to Swansea, so no damage or profit on the soccer Wednesday night but no bets either. Lunchtime saw me looking at the African Cup of Nations (not sure why to be honest), but do I back the favourites or the outsiders – or a mixture of both? Coward as I am, I went for the favourites, which saw me win on South Africa (BETDAQ odds of 2.2) and lose on Morocco (1.9) for a small profit but an awful lot of fun – I may even try the same tomorrow and see what happens?

Thursday

Two more bets on the Africa Cup Of Nations saw me increasing my bet size and backing Ghana to beat Mali at BETDAQ odds of 2.2 (Won 1-0) and then Democratic Republic of Congo to beat Niger at BETDAQ odds of 1.8 (0-0). Plenty of liquidity meant I could ask for (and get) the bigger price which is always good, and all I then needed to do was persuade the family to let me sit down and watch the games. With enough football to keep me occupied I ignored everything else which in this weather could well have been a sensible move, especially with a profit again (it’s so easy sometimes and impossible others) of a massive 0.2 of a point – I will try not to let it change my life though 🙂

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – Four winners out of six for the home teams in Ligue 1 on Saturday, I just love the French (at the moment).

Disaster of the week – Hull conceding a late equaliser and sinking my win treble.

Something for the weekend:
With the weather still on the dodgy side we can only hope the racing over jumps goes ahead this weekend though I have to mention the fitness questions abounds and my bets will be cut back accordingly to live to fight another day. If Cheltenham survives we can learn plenty ahead of the Festival meeting in March and I will be watching Imperial Commander very closely if he makes his long awaited comeback in the Argento Chase. He will surely need the run after close to two years off but this is NOT a real Gold Cup trial and he ought to at least place if he has any realistic chance of recapturing his crown at Prestbury Park in a couple of months and will carry a small amount of my money each way on those grounds.

Moving on to the football and we have an FA Cup weekend so expect a few upsets – the question is can I avoid those pitfalls? Millwall will be hoping to cause an upset against Aston Villa but I am actually hoping Paul Lambert rests some of his “stars” for their relegation fight and gives the youngsters a go tonight. They may have more fight than some we have seen of late and just to be on their books means they ought to be too good for the lower division side, and at odds of 3.2 on BETDAQ, a point is surely worth risking?

For a dodgy bet and away from the FA Cup, how about a little on Wycombe Wanderers to win at League Cup finalists Bradford? Looking at the league table the home side should win with ease, but they had an emotional and tiring game in midweek and their league form has rather dropped away of late and at odds on BETDAQ of 5.2, half a point could be worth a punt. Lastly, I am in need of a bit of sunshine (aren’t we all), and the nearest I can get at the moment is watching the football from South Africa. Two more bets will be struck on Saturday when I hope to see wins for Ivory Coast at 1.66 and Algeria at 2.15 and that will do on the football for now.
