THE BETDAQ PUNTER returns with his usual mix of looking back on the highs and lows of his betting week on BETDAQ and looking forward to this weekend.

Our intrepid BETDAQ PUNTER has a bet in the Oaks at Epsom this afternoon and has a cross-sport double too.

So how did his punting week and systems fare last week ?

Friday

Back to what resembles normality this week though we do have the Oaks and Derby to look forward to at the weekend as some kind of substitute for the horror that the football season will soon be officially over! I need my daily fix of BETDAQ trades and after making some good money last week, I am sorely tempted to have a bunch of small lay bets on odds on shots – if that’s how the old fashioned bookies make their money then surely I can join them if those nice BETDAQ backers are willing to play ball that is? Starting with the horses, odds on lays again today saw seven selections (I risked them all, no prejudice from me when it comes to trying to make some cash), and four winners three losers saw me add close to a point to the kitty – not to be sniffed at. Fir those who like a really good laugh (at my expense), a horse I back every time it runs slipped under my radar at Goodwood this afternoon and duly won at BETDAQ odds of 31.0 and goes by the name of Piscean. To rub salt in to the wounds I actually backed another horse in the same race (third placed Wentworth) who was generally labelled the unluckiest loser of the year so far – you really couldn’t make it up! One last lay for the evening saw me let the backers take plenty of my cash about the Miami Heat in the basketball (1.3 on BETDAQ) and they managed to lose as well – happy days even if it was a late night!

Saturday

Farewell to football for another season and as an Everton fan, I spend most of my spare minutes trying to second guess our Chairman with regard to a new manager to replace David Moyes. One big game today saw Dortmund take on Bayern Munich in the all German Champions league final but to be honest, with no British involvement other than the venue, I wasn’t all that bothered, though a small win bet on Bayern was placed at BETDAQ odds of 1.78 to try and keep the evening interesting. The racing left me floundering to find winners to back (see last week’s article – Reckless Abandon a close up third and Enobled fifth of six beaten about a County), so once again I went looking for losers (which should be so much easier in principle), finding just the three bets and only the one “winner” (BETDAQ odds 1.63), so plenty of money for me then! Tennis were next on my hit list (I am getting to like this laying stuff), though six odds on winners wiped out my profit from just the two losers for a two thirds of a point loss – though even I can live with that, and to my amusement one last lay bet on the basketball saw the Memphis Grizzlies betray their odds of 1.59 on BETDAQ when losing in overtime – another cracking result for us layers even if it meant a late start to Sunday.

Sunday

A late start and little of interest to be honest – and I do have household chores to do just like everyone else. French tennis seemed good for a laugh so once again small lay bets on the odds on shots was my plan of attack (and simple to execute which is the main thing). With so many matches in France I (luckily) only risked my cash on the Men’s singles and with fourteen winning favourites from fifteen matches it was NOT my day! Thanks to the short odds it wasn’t as bad as it seemed but losses were racked up, costing me close to six points for an OUCH! kind of day.

Monday

My biggest bet of the week on any one result was placed today on Watford to beat Crystal Palace at BETDAQ odds of 2.38 but what a waste of money that turned out to be. The game could be described as tactical or fascinating but plain boring would be more accurate in my eyes until the extra time penalty woke everyone up though all too late for Watford I am sorry to say as I watched my money go to the South side of the river Thames. Tennis was off my list for the day (its called sulking), but I did lay a couple on the horses for a winner at 2.0 and a loser at 1.55 and a small loss on the day – roll on Tuesday is all I can add.

Tuesday

I have started looking at the football leagues around the World as short-term replacements for the loss of my weekly soccer fix, but a little more research seems needed before committing cold hard cash regardless of prices. That becomes a work in progress but I did back a few favourites in the handicaps at all the tracks, staking to stop once (or if) I trap a winner and the short priced Pythagorean soon put those bets to bed with a win in leg two at BETDAQ odds of 2.1 which made today a whole lot better than Sunday or Monday! I didn’t bother laying the odds on (other things to do to be honest) but did so on the overnight basketball which also paid off when the Indiana Pacers shocked the Miami Heat with a 99-92 victory in the small hours leaving my lay bet on BETDAQ at 1.65 looking very pretty indeed!

Wednesday

There seems to be some kind of strange rule that the less I know about a sport the easier it is to make money on BETDAQ? I have been put off early round tennis and am still licking my wounds from Sunday but greyhounds looked like something new to play with so I gave it a go. I know nothing so chasing favourites with a staking plan seemed as good an idea as any (cowardly, but if it works…?), and with a 3.1 shot taking the first at Hall Green (thank you BETDAQ layers), I shut the hatches and took my greyhound profit while it was there. Thankfully for me I went back to my lay the odds on shots on the horses and after nine bets and just two winners (2.0 and 1.5), time to plan for another short holiday.

Thursday

Good news for most racing fans with the news that Frankie Dettori has been cleared by the French to ride again after his six month ban, and although he does polarise opinions, he is top class at his best and surely comes back with something to prove from the saddle? Dogs again today so Sheffield and Sunderland were on my mind in the morning, mouse hovering to place my bets. I sensibly started with small stakes and as is sods law, the first favourite won at Sunderland at BETDAQ odds of 3.6, so what to do now? My possibly risky answer was to start all over again which resulted in a loser and then a winner at BETDAQ odds of 2.1, after which I decided I had used all my luck up and it was time to look at something else and look forward to an Epsom kind of weekend.

Conclusions:
Bet of the week – Laying on the greyhounds was the quickest and easiest money I have made in quite some time.
Disaster of the week – Disaster of the week – A draw between Sunday Tennis from France and Watford’s dire performance against Crystal Palace plus missing a winner I have been backing all season.

Something for the weekend:
No point in pretending anything else, my thoughts are at Epsom as works have an outing on the old double decker bus on Oaks day with free drink as well, what more can I ask for? Winners would be nice and with my tablet and a spot of wi fi I know I can grab the best odds on my BETDAQ account, but that only helps if I find the winners! The rain is pouring (I hope that stops by race time), and if it affects the ground then I will be on Secret Gesture, trading at odds of around the 3.5 mark as I write though I won’t be having too much on as I think that’s a bit skinny though at least we know she handles the ground.

On Saturday we have the Derby of course and it looks likely that the prize money will be travelling over the sea with all bar three of the twelve runners trained overseas. I hope Dawn Approach can win and underline his potential even though the public are yet to take to him the way they did with Frankel, though stamina is a big question and I will be keeping a watching brief. Despite a load of friendlies on the football I can give them a miss but may well get involved in the Barbarians v British Lions match on Saturday lunchtime to add Rugby Union to our repertoire. In a game where the Lions players are building toward the test series in Australia, the 6.2 on BETDAQ about the barbarians is too tempting to ignore though a small bet will do for me than you very much.

Lastly, on a quiet kind of week, hoe about a short priced double on England to beat New Zealand in the one day International (BETDAQ odds of 1.51) and Brazil to beat England in the football Sunday (if it goes ahead) at BETDAQ odds of 1.63 – job done for another week.

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Horse racing Friday
1pt Win Secret Gesture 4.00pm Epsom at odds of about 3.5

Rugby Union Saturday
Half point Win Barbarians to beat the British Lions at odds of about 6.2

International double:
1pt Win double England to beat New Zealand first one day international Friday (1.51) and Brazil to beat England, football friendly Sunday (1.63)
