MATCH OVERVIEW:

The Indian Premier League goes back to Abu Dhabi on Thursday as Kings XI Punjab take on Mumbai Indians. This will be the 13th IPL game in the season, and it’s fair to say that Abu Dhabi now looks to be the toughest place to bat. Of course, a lot of games have been dominated by the arrival of dew and it’s been tough for the bowlers, but without dew it looks tough to chase here.

Kings XI Punjab have had a wild week! They scored 206/3 in Dubai and beat RCB by 97 runs, then they went to Sharjah and scored 223/2 only to end up losing in 19.3 overs! Obviously batting conditions have been excellent in Sharjah, along with heavy dew and short boundaries. Mumbai Indians have also had a wild week in fairness, they lost a Super Over on Monday against RCB after tying the game with 201/5.

This is a big game for both sides. They have shown promise and although they have both lost a Super Over, they now only have one win from three games and it’s important to stay at the top half of the table, it’s actually been very close so far. There’s been no standout team or team you’d suggest would finish last. We should have another great game here.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

As noted above, I feel Abu Dhabi is definitely the toughest place to bat from the three venues. It isn’t going to be a nightmare for batters however, as we are comparing it to two grounds with high scores. Sharjah is obviously a batting paradise and Dubai has had 200+ scores now too.

This will be the fifth game here, with the first inning scores from the first four games reading: 162/9 (chased down), 195/5 (won by 49 runs), 142/4 (chased down) and 162/4 (won by 15 runs). Delhi Capitals really struggled with the chase here on Tuesday, and there was no use of rags either which suggests we didn’t get dew. The weather is set fair again.

RECOMMENDED BET:

It’s hard to see anything other than a very close game here, and I’m surprised there’s such a big gap in the odds. Punjab are 2.26 and Mumbai at 1.73. Over the past couple of days we’ve had markets with both teams very close together in the odds – perhaps one side 1.95 for example. I don’t see why today should be any different. Punjab might not have a strong squad on paper with big stars, but their batters have been performing superbly. Credit where credit is due. Mumbai have been playing well too, and I can’t see anything bar a close game here. For me, Punjab are worth backing at the odds as they offer a bit of value.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

For me the whole in-running strategy has to focus on dew here, and whether it arrives or not. We’ve seen first had the effect it’s had on the tournament to date, and the whole game and trading strategy changes when it arrives. I expect batting to be reasonably tough without dew – maybe 165 a par score which will be tough to chase down without dew. However, we have had 12+ an over chased down with dew, so you can see how it changes the game.

The Punjab top order have been in excellent form so I would be happy to support them – I would worry about the middle to low order though. They haven’t had much practice and on paper they could come up a little short.
